Consciousness Speaks
Ramesh Balsekar
Ramesh has written more than a dozen books. Each one is worth reading. In talking to fans of Ramesh, I have found that very often a single book resonates most strongly for a given individual. For some it has been Sin and Guilt, for others A Duet of one, and for other individuals it has been one of the other titles. For me, it was Consciousness Speaks that somehow opened my mind and heart to the full appreciation of this wonderful teacher. The brief introduction by Wayne Liquorman sets the tone for the book. In fact, I believe that reading the eight-page introduction is worth the entire price of the book, and in this seed is contained the wholeness of the teaching. Although Ramesh is a brilliant and skillful writer, I believe he is at his best when teaching and responding to questions from seekers. This book uses the question and answer format and that is why I believe it is his most effective book, and certainly it has been his most popular book at our bookstore. When my sons became interested in Ramesh, it was this book that I provided for them to read first.
The book is very comprehensive, covering all subjects, including mind, intellect, emotions, biology, creation, etc. All the answers are straightforward and simple. Ramesh pulls no punches and allows the knowledge to flow through him, as the title of the book suggests. This is a book to be cherished and read over and over again.

Mirror of Consciousness: Art, Creativity and Veda
Anna Bonshek
Anna (a Fairfield resident) "traverses a wide range of themes pertaining to art, creativity, knowledge, and theory. Its unique perspective lies in its exposition of Vedic Science as brought to light by His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and in the application of the principles of this science to preliminary analysis of the Vastusutra Upanishad. No other publication has examined art and theory with the same comprehensive vision. Though comprehensive and detailed, it will appeal to those who are curious about trends in the visual arts, the advent and impact of new technologies, and the development of collective consciousness in our time.

The Physiology of Consciousness
Robert Keith Wallace
Dr. Wallace assesses the current health care crisis in the United States, including the rise of stress-related disease, and the side-effects and spiraling costs of modern medicine. These problems will only worsen, Dr. Wallace points out, if addressed merely by making administrative changes in the health care system.
Dr. Wallace presents a new paradigm based on the Maharishi Vedic Science program: the basis and source of the manifest "physiology of matter" is an unmanifest "physiology of consciousness." Only by understanding and directly experiencing this all-pervading level of abstract intelligence can we create true health.
Dr. Wallace conducted the original research on the Transcendental Meditation program and is the founding president of Maharishi University of Management (formerly Maharishi International University), where he currently is Executive Vice President, and Chairman of the Department of Physiological and Biological Sciences.

From Science to God: A Physicists' Journey into the Mystery of Consciousness
Peter Russell
Peter Russell is a marvelous human being and an excellent writer. Russell has degrees in physics and experimental psychology. He also learned to practice TM and attended a teacher-training course with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, in Rishikesh, India. In this book he recounts experiences from both his formal education and his personal explorations of consciousness.
The book is short but very sweet. It seems to come at least as much from the heart as from the intellect. Peter Russell has taken some very complex subjects and brought them to a level where everyone can understand them.
The essence of this book is that the Western paradigm, that matter created consciousness, is backwards. In fact, the objective evidence from physics and the subjective evidence from explorations into consciousness make it quite clear that matter was created by Consciousness. The book is very simple and elegant. I would think just about anyone would enjoy reading it. It will certainly give the reader food for thought about who he or she is, and what "reality" on the outside may or may not be.
If you want to gain insights into consciousness, the mystical experience, cosmology, and how they can be integrated from both an objective and subjective point of view, this is a book for you.

The Self-Aware Universe: How Consciousness Creates the Material World
Amit Goswami
Consciousness, not matter, is the ground of all existence, declares University of Oregon physicist Goswami, echoing the mystic sages of his native India. He holds that the universe is self-aware, and that consciousness creates the physical world. Calling this theory "monistic idealism," he claims it is not only "the basis of all religions worldwide" but also the correct philosophy for modern science. Once people give up the assumption that there is an objective reality independent of consciousness, the paradoxes of quantum physics are explainable, contends Goswami. He also applies his hypothesis to the so-called mind-body schism, which he attempts to heal. Sketching a model of the self, this demanding but rewarding treatise uses analogies from the "new physics" to throw light on choice, free will, creativity, the unconscious, and paths to spiritual growth. Illustrated.

What is Self: A Study of the Spiritual Journey in Terms of Consciousness
Bernadette Roberts
The latest hot non-duality book, written by a former cloistered nun. She writes from the Christian perspective and gives a nice balance to previous titles on this subject that tend to emphasis Eastern shadowing. Her views on the inherent differences between Eastern and Western views are very thought provoking. Her previous book, Experience of No Self, has been a constant seller at our store.
Review by Tony Kainauskas
About the Author
Bernadette Roberts is one of the most extraordinary contemplatives of our time. The child of a devout Catholic family, Roberts' contemplative experiences began at an early age. At fifteen, they began to fit into a frame of reference within her Christian tradition. Ten years of seclusion in a monastery followed, during which Bernadette realized an abiding state of oneness with God. According to the Christian mystical tradition, this egoless, unitive state is as far as one can progress in this life.

Transcending the Levels of Consciousness
David R Hawkins
Transcending the Levels of Consciousness, explores the ego's expressions and inherent limitations and gives detailed explanations and instructions on how to transcend them. It expands the understanding of the levels of consciousness, as presented in the now widely known Map of Consciousness. This book focuses on the individual, and studies the experiential, subjective blocks to the advancement of consciousness that leads to progressive spiritual awareness and on to higher levels of consciousness—preparatory to advanced states, such as Enlightenment itself. By analyzing the various obstacles and levels to be transcended, certain principles that support spiritual evolution are self-revealing. This book is a practical manual rather than a comprehensive analysis.

A Brief Tour of Higher Consciousness: A Cosmic Book on the Mechanics of Creation
Itzhak Bentov
A Brief Tour of Higher Consciousness, by Itzhak Bentov is the best (and most fun) introduction to the modern idea of Enlightenment combined with quantum physics that I have ever come across. And I have been swimming in these "Enlightenment" waters for over 35 years now.
This is the same Itzhak Bentov who, on his last plane ride, as he was boarding the plane, realized that no one on the plane had an aura and he knew that they were all destined to crash. He got on the plane anyway because he knew it was time to move on to greater things. Please just treat this as a rumor.
This little book of 113 pages is light, fun, profound, and mathematical. The author relates the ultimate meaning of the Universe with both the Hebrew and Sanskrit alphabets. Every single one of you should own this book, or at least read it. I especially like the chapter about the Devas because it so closely parallels my own experience.
The subtitle of this tome is also revealing: "A Cosmic Book on the Mechanics of Creation." Wonderful.

Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness and Creativity
David Lynch
“In this rare work of public disclosure, filmmaker David Lynch describes his personal methods of capturing and working with ideas, and the immense creative benefits he has experienced from the practice of meditation.
Over the last four decades, David Lynch has created some of the best-known and widely discussed screen works of our time. This distinctive writer-director's art bears not only the mark of box-office success but also critical acclaim and cultural posterity.
Yet Lynch generally reveals little of himself, or the ideas behind his work. Now he provides a rare window into his methods as an artist and his personal working style. In Catching the Big Fish , Lynch writes candidly about the tremendous creative benefits he has gained from his thirty-two-year commitment to practicing Transcendental Meditation .
In brief chapters, Lynch describes the experience of "diving within" and "catching" ideas like fish-and then preparing them for television or movie screens, and other mediums in which Lynch works, such as photography and painting.
In the book's first section, Lynch discusses the development of his ideas-where they come from, how he grasps them, and which ones appeal to him the most. He then shares his passion for "the doing"-whether moviemaking, painting, or other creative expressions. Lynch talks specifically about how he puts his thoughts into action and how he engages with others around him. Finally, he discusses the self and the surrounding world -and how the process of "diving within" that has so deeply affected his own work can directly benefit others.
Catching the Big Fish provides unprecedented insight into Lynch's methods, as it also offers a set of practical ideas that speak to matters of personal fulfillment, increased creativity, and greater harmony with one's surroundings.
The book comes as a revelation to the legion of fans who have longed to better understand Lynch's deeply personal vision. And it is equally intriguing to anyone who grapples with questions such as: "Where do ideas come from?" and "How can I nurture creativity?”

The Head Trip: Adventures on the Wheel of Consciousness
Jeff Warren
This is one of those very rare non-fiction books that is so easy to read and so interesting and well framed that it sucks the reader into its web just like a great novel.
The first 150 pages or so deals with the nature of sleep. The neurology, the physiology and the subjective experiences are all dealt with in a coherent and personalized manner. I can’t begin to explain how fascinating it is to learn so much about sleep, something which we so take for granted, and yet which is so little understood. This was truly an amazing section; funny, entertaining, and full of science and insights that are so good I would call them “gifts” from the author.
Most of us have some familiarity with the concepts of deep sleep and REM sleep. Few of us I would venture to say, know much if anything about the Hypnagogic, The Watch, The Lucid Dream, The Trance, The SMR, or The Pure Conscious Event. Each of the above is the subject of a chapter in the book. Each chapter is fascinating and enlightening. I really feel enriched by the lessons about sleep and even find myself enjoying the act of going to sleep, sleeping, and even waking in the middle of the night now that I understand so much more about it. If the book was complete with only the final chapter on sleep that would be more than enough to recommend this as one of the best books I have read in many years. I feel that I cannot emphasize enough how reading this book has enhanced my experiences and enjoyment of going to sleep, sleeping, and even waking up!
What is particularly charming about this book is that the author has not only done an excellent job of researching the subject, more importantly he has made himself a guinea pig, participating in a number of studies and experimenting with various techniques himself. His experiences and commentaries are very rich and most fascinating.
But there is more, as the author goes on to explore the waking state and its many nuances. His exploration of hypnosis, day dreams, SMR, and a newer more sophisticated form of neurofeedback covers fascinating territories with the same thoroughness, insightfulness, and personal participation as his studies of the sleep states.
This is one of those books I want everyone to read. I hope many of you will enjoy this as much as I did. The last book I felt this strongly about, in terms of its universal appeal was The Omnivore’s Dilemma.

Biocentrism: How Life and Consciousness Are the Keys to Understanding the True Nature of the Univers
Robert Lanza
A very exciting and important book.
The central thesis of this book is that "life creates the universe rather than vice versa". The thesis is developed using the multi-discipline backgrounds of the authors, which include leading edge biology, neuro-science, astronomy, quantum physics, and even common sense.
Here are a smattering of what I consider to be important quotes or insights found in this book:
"Until recently, we thought we knew what the universe was made of, but it now turns out that 96 per cent of the universe is composed of dark matter and dark energy, and we have virtually no idea what they are."
"It even turns out that the Big Bang has no answer for one of the greatest mysteries in the universe: why is the universe exquisitely fine-turned to support life?"
"It is well known that quantum theory, while working incredibly well mathematically, makes no logical sense…"
"In the last few decades, there has been considerable discussion of a basic paradox in the construction of the universe as we know it. Why are the laws of physics exactly balanced for animal life to exist? For example, if the Big Bang had been one-part-in-a-million more powerful, it would have rushed out too fast for the galaxies and life to develop…"
"And this is one of the central themes of biocentrism and this book: that the animal observer creates reality and not the other way around."
The above should give you enough of a taste to figure out whether or not this is a book for you. I find this approach and thinking fascinating and meaningful. This is one of the best and most important books I have ever read.
