Mysticism (Eastern and Western) is the experience of direct contact or union with that which is indescribable, unspeakable, etc. Depending upon the Mystics' background and cultural heritage he may describe his contact as being with "God, Source, The Infinite, Brahman, The Universe, Pure Bliss, The Cosmic Spirit, etc." Most people view Mysticism as the opposite of "reality." In fact, reality is far more complex and multi-leveled than most people think. Reality is essentially agreement. If the majority agree, then we say something is real. Our Western culture has accepted the view that any experience that falls outside our rational, conceptual framework should be dismissed. Eastern culture has a much more accepting view of these experiences of "higher states" or "altered states." It is my belief that as scientists go deeper and deeper into the nature of "reality", by looking at the "big bang" and into the levels of quantum physics, that science and mysticism are converging in their world view. The one thing I think I know for sure is that words cannot communicate the actual mystical experience. Ram Dass, in his fabulous book, One Liners, puts it all into perspective and simplicity with the following one liner: "Religions are founded by what mystics say when they come back, but what mystics say is not the same was what happened to them." The mystical traditions are very rich, both in the East and in the West. We hope you find the books below to be worthy of your time, and that perhaps one or more of them may reach or touch that chord within you that allows you to appreciate the mystical experience.

Surprised by Grace
Amber Terrell
Amber tells her story in a very personalized way… as if I am peeking at someone’s diary of their search for truth, made even more so by the fact that I know Amber personally. After 25 years spent with one guru Amber feels frustrated and disillusioned with the spiritual journey. After deciding to lay off Spiritual gurus she quickly becomes involved with another: Gangaji, a western devotee of Papiji (Sri H. W. L. Poonja.) The love and adoration Amber feels for her new master is felt throughout her every word. This book is really a Valentine to Gangaiji, whom Amber feels has finally woken her up after years of deep sleep. This is a must book for any fan of Gangaji and for any one interested in life behind the scenes of a popular spiritual movement. I found the book an interesting read as Amber’s journey seems to parallel other spiritual seekers’ quest, their first years with a Spiritual movement, and then the frustration and disenchantment followed by a letting go of the search altogether. The seeker is then lead to the end of the search as one realizes there was really nowhere to go and no path to tread. Review by Tony Kainauskas.

Steppenwolf
Hermann Hesse
When I first read Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse I was a senior in college and going through all the typical ups and downs, crises and experiments, searches and losses, and conflicts common to my generation. Harry Haller, the protagonist, was a character with whom I could really identify. Haller was struggling to reconcile his wild, wolf like nature with his reclusive, intellectual, rational self. I thought the "Magic Theater" as described in this novel held the key to fulfillment in life. Recently my 25-year-old son read the book and responded very positively to the poetic elements and glimmers of truth in this remarkable work. In the author's note, written by Hesse in 1961 (the book was written in 1927 when Hesse was 40 years old), he states: "Poetic writing can be understood and misunderstood in many ways. In most cases the author is not the right authority to decide on where the reader ceases to understand and the misunderstanding begins… " Hesse goes on to explain that surprisingly (at least to him) this book seems to be better understood by youthful readers than readers in their 50's, even though he wrote the book when he was 40 and Harry Haller, the main character, is a man at least 40 years old and perhaps older. My advice is very simple. No matter how old you are, you should read or, as I have recently done, re-read this book. It remains, in my opinion, one of the greatest short novels of all time. Hesse's ability to synthesize the East and the West, and his Jungian insights make him a unique artist from his or any generation. Review by Len Oppenheim

Man Was Not Born to Cry
Joel Goldsmith
This book was a dear friend to me during a past spiritual/emotional crisis. Joel’s background is Christianity, but the themes in his book are universal (very Advaita in fact.) His tone is very soothing and his words very uplifting and transformative. I highly recommend this book as an introduction to Joel Goldsmith’s works. He is truly a caring spiritual guide through our times of trial. Man may not be born to cry, but you will be –out of sheer joy and relief after reading this book. I guarantee it. An interesting side note: After reading this book I loaned it to my sister. She just filed it away in her closet without giving it a second glance. Years later while cleaning the closet the book fell on her head, and at that point she felt that maybe it was time to give it a look. She was literally blown away by Goldsmith’s book and it had an immediate and lasting effect on her spiritual life. Review by Tony Kainauskas.

Self-Powerment: Towards a New Way of Living
Faye Mandell
I became acquainted with Faye’s book when her publisher, Namaste (they publish Eckhart Tolle’s books), contacted me about hosting Faye for a book signing and seminar. The editor of the publishing company went on excitedly about Faye. Well, upon reading her book and personally meeting Faye, I could see what the excitement was all about. Faye’s book is a very practical guide for evaluating present moment awareness. Her basic concept is that feelings piggy back themselves onto thoughts and take us out of the present moment. Putting awareness on the emotion one is experiencing (without judging) is a powerful road map to help us understand where the particular thought has led us, either past or future. That awareness quietly puts us back into the present moment, and that moment is always perfect and as it should be. Meeting Faye, I felt her high energy level, yet this energy level was deeply rooted in inner silence and deep quietness. The contrast was truly fun to experience. I knew Faye was living what she was teaching in her book and seminars. She is a powerful woman and has a powerful effect on all those with which she comes in contact. Review by Tony Kainauskas.

The Power of Now
Eckhart Tolle
Eckhart's book may have hit the main stream big time but it still remains a wonderfully innocent book. Eckhart's words are a wonderful introduction to the power of present moment awareness… it gives any seeker, whether a long time meditator or a novice just starting down the path, a wonderful easy-to-grasp description of Being and the freedom that comes with Self Awareness. As I read The Power of Now it brought to mind the old lectures of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi during the early 1970's… the simple loving innocence of the words that carried with them a very deep spiritual message. If you are one of the few who are not familiar with The Power of Now, you are now in for a wonderful treat. Review by Tony Kainauskas

Return From Tomorrow
George G. Ritchie
I find myself to be skeptical of books that deal with near death experiences. I mean, is it for real or was the author hallucinating or dreaming? Ritchie’s book struck me as being different… there was a sense that this is it. Ritchie is currently a Medical Doctor and was chairman of the Dept. of Psychiatry of Towers Hospital. His experience took place during World War II as he lay in an army hospital. The incident took 9 minutes. Whether he was really dead during this period is a judgment call, (he was pronounced as such) but he was as close to death as a human can be. His experience makes the after life seem like an advanced University course of spiritual learning. And much of our experience there is dependent on how we lived our lives here. Ultimately the main thing that stuck with me about this book was the total unconditional love that the author felt during his time away from his body. It was so powerful and encompassing that it was unlike any experience he felt on Earth. Reading these passages helped to lessen my own fear of death and reading his words helped create a deep peace within myself. The book itself is short and can be read in one sitting, and due to its riveting subject material many do. If you have any interest in near death experiences this is the book for you. Dr Ritchie’s experience was the motivating factor behind Raymond Moody’s (recognized authority on the subject of near death) lifelong passionate study of this phenomenon. Reviewed by Tony Kainauskas.

Daily Afflictions: The Agony of Being Connected to Everything in the Universe
Andrew Boyd
I loved this book. It is filled with deep spiritual truths told with a dark humor that ends up bringing much spiritual light. At first Boyd’s book seems to be a satire about the spiritual quest, but as you delve deeper into it you realize (with at first some initial shock) that this is for real and is filled with many truths about the shadows of the spiritual path… the realities of having one foot in the spiritual and one foot in the relative worlds. If you love spiritual truths told with a dark sense of humor this is a must book for your spiritual library. Review by Tony Kainauskas.

Loving What Is
Byron Katie
The book is as good as the title. This book really delivers—it is an incredible "how-to." "How to" embrace your very own life exactly as it is unfolding in present time with all its goodness and what you might call its badness. The subtitle of the book is "Four Questions That Can Change Your Life." I can attest through personal experience that with sincere application you can indeed change your life. There are not many books that even attempt to provide such simple, clear-cut, profound advice, much less actively provide it. This is a rare and wonderful book for those who are interested. My Diamond Days with Osho
Ma Prem Shunyo
A first person narrative of time spent with a master. This is my favorite genre. I love to see how the student views the master, and how the student changes throughout the process and to see how the view of the master progresses. This is written by a woman sanyassin, who has a real zest for life and a strong magnetic link to the spiritual. I liked this book because it felt totally honest and the author seemed to "let it all hang out." Many times one reads a first person narrative and gets the feeling the teller of the tale is very careful about what he or she included and excluded in order to make both the storyteller and the master appear only in the best light. This book hits hard with integrity. Born Sandra, and British by birth, this fascinating lady met Osho in 1976 and stayed with him until he passed on about 15 years later. She was clearly in the "inner circle," and it was her dharma to wash and iron his robes and perform other duties of personal service. The author really has a unique view of the action in and around Osho, and this story is a very natural follow-on if you have read Osho’s autobiography. Now you get a view of the same events from a different set of eyes and a different viewpoint. If you find Osho interesting, this is a "must read." Review by Len Oppenheim.

The Book of Secrets
Osho
This book by Osho is literally and figuratively "heavy." It is a hardbound volume of over 1000 pages. It is the "soup to nuts" compendium of Osho’s teachings. It is about life, death, and everything in between. It is both philosophical and practical, containing many techniques suggested to practice. If Osho had attained the widespread acceptance as one of the great teachers of the 20th Century, like Nisargadatta, this book would be the equivalent of I Am That. For the serious student of Yoga, Tantra, the metaphysical, and the occult, this is a giant feast that can be read slowly over a long period of time. Review by Len Oppenheim.

The Dancing Wu Li Masters: An Overview of the New Physics
Gary Zukav
This is the book I recommend for everyone. Although the book was first published in 1979, and there have been new developments in cutting edge quantum physics and cosmology since then, neither the basic laws of nature, nor the essence of consciousness, have changed in the last quarter of a century. The book is cleverly written and brilliantly organized. All the really big and important issues and concepts are included. The book captures the joy and astonishment of the author on his personal journey of understanding. My favorite quote is: "There are even more interpretations of quantum mechanics, but all of them are weird in some way. Quantum physics is stranger than science fiction". His explanation of the "split screen experiment" which demonstrates the dual nature of light (wave and particle) is really important and made very comprehensible. One of my heroes, Richard Feynman, has been quoted as saying nothing is more profound or important in studying physics than the split screen experiment. This is the book that gives the non-scientist the best tools for connecting consciousness and physical reality. We think this book is so important we have included it in our categoryBooks You Can’t Live Without. Review by Len Oppenheim.

The Tao of Physics
Fritjof Capra
This is another classic in this genre. I found this book to be a little bit more scholarly and thus a little less readable and not quite as enjoyable as the Wu Li Masters. Nevertheless it is highly recommended and he does a great job of providing a synopsis of Eastern thought along with a lucid description of modern physics. The author, himself, in the first paragraph of the epilogue, provides a much better summary in a far more concise manner than I can: "The Eastern religious philosophies are concerned with timeless mystical knowledge which lies beyond reasoning and cannot be adequately expressed in words. The relation of this knowledge to modern physics is but one of its many aspects and, like all the others, it cannot be demonstrated conclusively but has to be experienced in a direct intuitive way. What I hope to have achieved to some extent, then, is not a rigorous demonstration, but rather to have given the reader an opportunity to relive, every now and then, an experience which has become for me a source of continuing joy and inspiration; that the principal theories and models of modern physics lead to a view of the world which is internally consistent and in perfect harmony with the views of Eastern mysticism."(Emphasis added.) A Search in Secret India
Paul Brunton
This book is included in our very select category Books You Can’t Live Without Not only is Brunton given credit for introducing Ramana Maharshi to the West, but this book stands out, at least in my opinion, as a great classic among all the books ever written by Western seekers who have gone to the East, seeking truth and/or a guru. This is a fantastic chronicle of a spiritual journey. It is also a real "period piece" describing both England and India in an earlier age of greater innocence. Brunton does a perfect job of describing his pursuit and his meetings with many miraculous saints and miracle men. I rank this book right up there with Autobiography of a Yogi, books that everyone, not just seekers, must read and will almost certainly enjoy. If you have not yet read this book, you have a real treat in store for yourself. Review by Len Oppenheim.

Be Here Now
Ram Dass
Written in 1971, Be Here Now is a "piece of work." I can’t describe this book. It is a hodgepodge, a psychedelic trip in print. If you have never read it, you will probably enjoy the glimpse into the past. If you read it when it first came out you have probably forgotten everything about it. It is a flashback, a trip. Ram Dass describes this as a journey of transformation. I think it is fun to read something like this now, and see how it has changed because our perspective has changed. Review by Len Oppenheim.

One Liners: A Mini-manual for a Spiritual Life
Ram Dass
The book is 235 pages, one sentence or one paragraph per page, of the distillation of the wisdom the author has gathered and disseminated during his more than 30 years of seeking and lecturing. Books like this are very precious to me. Ram Dass is wise and eclectic. Here are a few samples I chose just by randomly opening the book: "Treat everyone you meet like God in drag.""It is very hard to grow, because it’s difficult to let go of the models of ourselves in which we’ve invested so heavily." "You can’t buy into one half of a polarity without getting the other half. You want good? You’ve got evil. You want pleasure? You’ve got pain. That’s just the way it is." Reincarnation: The Missing Link in Christianity
Elizabeth Clare Prophet
A book that people interested in the history of Christianity will find very compelling. The book is an interesting mix of scholarliness and personal narrative. I learned a tremendous amount about how the Church has evolved over the years and what the Church fathers thought when they added or shed doctrines. The bottom line here is a compelling case for concluding that Jesus believed in and taught reincarnation, and a clear historical account of how and why these teachings were expurgated from church doctrine. The story of Emperor Constantine, and the Council of Nicea is well presented and makes the book worth reading. Finally, the author does a masterful job of going beyond the mere historical aspects of the story, getting into a wonderful and very lucid description of mysticism, modern mysticism, and how mysticism ties into quantum physics. I was enthralled by her description of how the discoveries of quantum physics tie in with the Gnostics’ description of "the Kingdom". "The Kingdom" is described by Prophet as that place "Where there is no time and space." Not only does she introduce this concept from the mystic’s point of view, but also she explains how the principle of non-locality was demonstrated in a series of quantum physics experiments during the 1980’s. Is sum, there is a lot of territory covered in this book, and it is done carefully and professionally. Review by Len Oppenheim.

Sai Baba Man of Miracles

Written in 1971, yet it still remains, at least in my opinion, the best book to start with if you have not read about Sai Baba. Sai Baba the Holy Man and the Psychiatrist
Samuel H. Sandweiss M.D.
Written in 1975 but remains timely. This is a very personalized account of a western psychiatrist who goes to India, spends time with Sai Baba and feels compelled to relate the story of an avatar "who can materialize objects from thin air and is capable of remarkable clairvoyant, telepathic, and healing powers; who is able to transform himself into other forms and identities and transport himself great distances instantaneously; and who has been seen in two or more places at once." Sandweiss wrote this at a time when it was an "off the wall" position for a respected psychiatrist to not only attest to these miraculous powers, but also embrace the spiritual message from this avatar. This is a classic first person narrative, well-worth reading. Review by Len Oppenheim.

My Baba and I
Dr. John Hislop
One of many first person narratives written about Sai Baba. What makes this one a little special is that Hislop and his wife not only met Sai Baba, but they had previously met Yogananda, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, and other great masters. Hislop’ s personal history of having met these other great spiritual luminaries of our age adds a depth to this account that I found most appealing. Describing his first meeting with Baba, the author says: "It is difficult, and probably impossible to express in words the effect upon myself of that first meeting with Baba. My entire being was profoundly affected and changed. Immediately Baba became the center of my life and has remained so. In his presence, at that first meeting, the world fell away from me, my entire consciousness was drawn inward and, at a most subtle level of awareness, Baba appeared in my heart as love." This book is very compelling and focuses on the spiritual teachings of this "miracle man." Review by Len Oppenheim.

Wake Up Laughing: My Miraculous Life with Sai Baba
Connie Shaw
Published in 2000, making it a relative newcomer to the first person accounts of meeting with Sai Baba. For some reason I found this to be the most enjoyable book I have read on the topic of Sai Baba. Her writing style is very charming and captivating. It feels as if the author is being flat out honest and candid. Very often, I find books written by devotees to be too carefully orchestrated. This book flows, and has drama, love, joy, and humor. Everyone will enjoy reading this account. Review by Len Oppenheim.

It's Here Now, (Are You?) A Spiritual Memoir
Bhagavan Dass
The author was born Michael Riggs and grew up in Laguna Beach, California. According to this memoir he was 18 years old, when he left home "to search for his holy grail." He arrived in India in 1964. I can’t even begin to describe his exploits and experiences. They run the gamut from drugs to sex to spiritual awareness. While I am somewhat skeptical about the truth or validity of many of the episodes and escapades described in this book, Bhagavan Dass has seen it all and done most of it, and his experiences are revealing and exciting. He takes credit for introducing Ram Dass to his guru, Neem Karoli Baba. The author spent time with Alan Watts, Allen Ginsburg, Jerry Garcia and many other famous characters from the Beat and Hip generations. This is a life that oscillated from the penthouse to the outhouse on many occasions. There is something for everyone in this book, and whether it is all the literal truth or not is irrelevant because it is so fascinating. You will want to read it from cover to cover. Daughter of Fire
Irina Tweedie
This is a true classic, but is clearly not for everyone. This "Diary of a Spiritual Training with a Sufi Master" is just over 800 pages long and can be heavy and onerous. Tweedie was 59 when she met her guru, Bhai Sahib, in 1959. Her master told her to keep a diary. This is her diary. It is detailed and honest. I have never read another book like it. The author goes through many ups and downs and they are all reported in the book. Not only is this a rare documentary of a serious seeker, it is also a rare glimpse into the teachings of a Sufi master. Tweedie was born in Russia, educated in Vienna and Paris and was married to an English naval officer who passed away in 1954. She had a strong background in Theosophy, which explains why, and how she ended up in India seeking her master. Tweedie may have been more than just a seeker; many regard her as having achieved her goal. Tweedie is the real deal, as far away from a dilettante as one could possibly be. Review by Len Oppenheim.

The Odyssey of Enlightenment
Berthold Madhukar Thompson
This is a book to which I give the highest possible recommendation. I love chronicles of personal seeking, when well written and obviously truthful. This one fits the bill. Thompson has chapters on 12 spiritual teachers and he does an excellent job of capturing the essence of both the teaching and the teacher. Each chapter follows the question and answer format, which I found to be very clear and concise. I also found that Thompson asked most of the questions I would like to ask, were I in his position. Among the most well known teachers in his journey are Osho, Papaji, Gangaji, Ramesh Balsekar, U.G. Krishnamurti, and Andrew Cohen. (Although Thompson is a native of Germany, his English is excellent.) There is a great intimacy and truthfulness about this book that makes it very compelling. If you are not prepared to go to India and seek out saints and masters in remote locations, reading this is the next best thing. Thompson now lives in Hawaii, and after reading this book I would be very tempted to pay him a visit to discuss his experiences and the wisdom he has gained. I rate this an absolutely must read book for any spiritual seeker. An added bonus is that there are photos of each of the 12 masters. Often their eyes and features communicate a great deal. Finally, the author does not claim to be enlightened, and his odyssey leads him to question whether or not enlightenment is achievable by following any guru or any particular sadhanas recommended by any teacher. Perhaps the lesson to be learned is that active seeking actually stands in the way of finding. This lesson is expressed in the title of the chapter about U.G. Krishnamurti, "The Worst Desire Is the Desire for Enlightenment." Review by Len Oppenheim.

Swami: Encounters with Modern Mystics
Doug Boyd
I confess to be a "junky" when it comes to books written by people who have spent time with masters, saints, yogis, swamis, and gyanis. I am fascinated by the experiences these seekers encounter and by the stories about the various luminaries they meet. This book did not disappoint me at all. The first one-third of the book describes the months in 1970 when the author served as Swami Rama's personal assistant while the Swami was being studied by the doctors and researchers at the Menninger Foundation in Kansas City. The Institute people were interested in studying the Swami's physiology and brain wave functioning as he did such Yogic feats as stopping his heart, experiencing various states of consciousness, and altering body temperature etc. What makes this section of the book most interesting is that the author, Boyd, is not a devotee and is quite objective in his observations and judgments. It is really most fascinating to learn so many intimate details about a highly evolved Yogi who had been a Shankaracharya and then founded the very successful worldwide organization, The Himalayan Institute. Swami Rama was both very highly educated in Western institutions of higher learning, and an accomplished Yogi who had visited virtually all the major saints and yogis of the mid-twentieth century. Boyd later goes to India with a group from the Institute who take all their paraphernalia with them to study other Yogi's. They spend time in and around Rishikesh and their meetings and explorations are very interesting. Finally, Boyd goes back to India by himself, eventually returning to Hardwar and then Rishikesh. He is accompanied by Hridiya Sing, who acts as his guide and translator. Boyd spends some "quality time" with a number of interesting Swami's. Perhaps most interesting is the time spent with Tat Walla Baba. What sets this book apart from most of the other books I have read by "seekers" visiting holy men in India is that Boyd is not really a seeker. Instead he is an "observer". This puts a different spin on his experiences and the view one gets of the various holy men. Boyd unlike virtually all the other seekers I have read is really not looking for enlightenment or personal evolution. Instead he is trying to figure out how to make the world a better place on a more exoteric level. The book covers very interesting ground and is well written. I rate it a "must read". The Hand of God: Thought and Images Reflecting the Spirit of the Universe
Michael Reagan, et al
Founder of Lionheart Books, Reagan has produced the ideal smaller coffee-table book for the 21st century. The Hand of God combines dozens of dazzling images of starscapes and far planets captured by the Hubble telescope with reflections on the self, the stars, and the universe, from writers as various as Oscar Wilde, Albert Einstein, Annie Dillard, and Edward Taylor. To Reagan's credit, the writers selected are admirable, and the quotations from their works are well chosen, but the images alone are worth the price of admission and are as profound as the writings that surround them. Highly recommended. © 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Introduction to Metaphysics
Martin Heidegger
Martin Heidegger’s Introduction to Metaphysics fired up my life-long quest for awakened insight; the roots of existence; and values, obligations, and responsibilities connected with living a meaningful life. Asked to read and review Introduction to Metaphysics to complete a sophomore undergraduate course in metaphysics in 1967, I spent a summer pondering every nuance and character. I was left with a consuming thirst to probe further. What Heidegger presents in abstract, Western intellectual thought, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi presents to me in a simple, lucid, accessible synthesis of Eastern and Western metaphysics. Dance of a Rich Yogi: Liberation Through Loss
Ed Beckley
One day Ed had it all… millions of dollars, beautiful homes, a loving family, direct attention from his Spiritual Guru, and the respect and admiration of his hometown of Fairfield Iowa. The next day he was in a cab being driven to Federal Prison to serve time for fraud. Ed’s journey from material wealth to loss to spiritual fullness intersects various masters from Maharishi Mahesh Yogi to Mata Amritanandamayi (Amma)… and various spiritual disciplines. I most enjoyed the sections on Ed’s stay at Amma’s ashram in India… the pleasures and the hardships of being with Amma at her Indian home makes for enjoyable reading and is a peek at the reality of Ashram life. Also, the prison section was riveting. Ed’s stories of his relationships with the guards and fellow prisoners created an interesting juxtaposition between Ashram and prison life. Ed was a long time resident of Fairfield, Iowa (the US capital of the TM Movement) and during the 1980’s he founded and was head of The Beckley Group, at that time Fairfield, Iowa’s largest employer. Review by Tony Kainauskas. Strictly truthful or somewhat fictional doesn’t really matter when it comes to a good read. This book definitely qualifies as a good read. The author’s life as told here is fascinating. Mr. Beckley pulls you in with a lively, detailed account of dramatic life experiences and frames the whole thing as a cosmic unfolding preceding liberation and enlightenment. He doesn’t try to prove that the events of his life actually caused the enlightenment, just that they preceded it—smart move. The account of his approximately thirteen months in prison is particularly good reading partly because most of us have never had an experience remotely akin to it. He earns an A+ from the reader and the cosmic grader for doing his best to turn lemons into lemonade, or as his friend Satyam Nadeem said, "… onions to pearls." Review by The Literate Lady.

Unfolding against the backdrop of Benares in the 1940's where she lived as a teacher and musician, we are given an in depth picture of her intense relationship with the extraordinary woman who becomes her guru Sri Anandamayee Ma. Atmananda as she came to be known was also closely associated with J. Krishnamurti, and a unique picture is given of him here in comparison with his peers and contemporaries within India. A Fortune-Teller Told Me
Tiziano Terzani
This is a very unique book. The author is Italian born, but he has spent most of his adult life in China and Southeast Asia. He is, by trade, a journalist. He combines the observational powers and cynicism endemic to his profession. He is also an excellent storyteller. In 1973 the author came across a fortune-teller who told him that he must avoid flying in the year 1993, or he would die. Terzani was skeptical, but as 1993 approached he decided that not flying for a year might be a good idea. Ignoring the possibility of death, the attractiveness of traveling by ship, train, auto, etc. might be both interesting and rewarding. In his words, it turned out to be "one of the most extraordinary years I have ever spent". He visited Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Japan, Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia. His observations and experiences developed into a wonderful travel book that most people would certainly enjoy. His observations about people and cultures are first rate. His side trips to visit soothsayers or fortune-tellers add a very fascinating dimension to what would be an excellent read without this little bit of spice. I learned a tremendous amount about Asia and would recommend this book to other armchair travelers who want to see a very interesting part of the world from a very unique perspective. I rate this book very highly and found in very engrossing and easy to read. Review by Len Oppenheim If you like Asia, astrology, traveling, adventure, or just plain old weirdness… you will love this book. I guarantee it. This is one of the best books about fortune telling (and I am a professional astrologer) and travel that I have ever come across hellip; and I own over 150 astrology books and I have read many true-life travelogues. Buy it—you will like it. Review by Michael Laughrin. Warned by a Hong Kong fortune-teller not to risk flying for an entire year, Tiziano Terzani—a vastly experienced Asia correspondent—took what he called "the first step into an unknown world… It turned out to be one of the most extraordinary years I have ever spent: I was marked for death, and instead I was reborn." Traveling by foot, boat, bus, car, and train, he visited Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Mongolia, Japan, Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia. Geography expanded under his feet. He consulted soothsayers, sorcerers, and shamans and received much advice—some wise, some otherwise—about his future. With time to think, he learned to understand, respect, and fear for older ways of life and beliefs now threatened by the crasser forms of Western modernity. He rediscovered a place he had been reporting on for decades. And reinvigorated himself in the process.

Holy Cow: An Indian Adventure
Sarah MacDonald
For someone who has never been to India, I sure have read a lot of books about India. Most of them have a certain message that they are trying to get across: how spiritual India is, how crowded India is, how insane India is., but most of them miss the mark in 3 dimensionality. Holy Cow is an irreverent, complaining but ultimately uplifting true life story of a woman who spent 1 year in India – hating it at first but loving it at the end. For some strange reason I loved this book but then again I love spicy food and this book is both in you face, tender and transcendental all at the same time ( and is cheaper than a round trip ticket to India) Review by Michael Laughrin. Before my first trip to India a good friend who had been there a number of times told me what to expect. He said: “India is a country that went on an acid trip and never quite came all the way back.” After my first visit to India I knew he had given me a perfect description. The cover of Holy Cow has a psychedelic look and feel to it. The book captures the uniqueness of India, from its psychedelic ambience to the upside down and chaotic nature of the various aspects of Indian society. Whether you have been to India, are contemplating going to India, or would never set foot in India this is a book for you! The author, Sarah Macdonald is a 30 something Australian lady who moves to Delhi to live with her boyfriend who works for an Australian TV network. Sarah really experiences modern India on many levels. She is perceptive and cynical enough to be extremely entertaining. Not your typical “seeker” Sarah still manages to explore all the great religions in India. She explores and encounters Hinduism, Jainism, Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism, Sikhism, Parsis and even Sufis. Her explorations are both entertaining and enlightening, not to mention often hilarious. She does a great job of catching the unique aspects of modern India and its changing social mores, with the traditions that bind it to its past. If you like truth and honesty and a refreshing view written with great skill and obvious joy you will thoroughly enjoy this book. My wife, Dena, and I, have very different tastes in reading. This is a book we both enjoyed immensely. This means it is likely to appeal to almost everyone. Review by Len Oppenheim.

Mystics, Magicians and Medicine People: Tales of a Wanderer
Doug Boyd
This is the second book I have had the pleasure of reading this year by Doug Boyd. (I highly recommend the other, Swami I reviewed earlier.) Boyd is a very unique writer/seeker/commentator. He seems to be more objective and less married to point of view than others I have read. This book consists of what the author calls seven “scenes”. Each is a story about an encounter over time with one or more people the author spends time with and gets to know. The scenes are eclectic. The personalities are cross-cultural—Korean, Japanese, Native American, and Caucasian. Each scene or personality is complete in its own fullness. Yet when woven together the whole becomes greater than the sum of the parts. Each of these scenes deals with a person who has mystical or magical powers or attributes, and this certainly adds to the interest and appeal, but the message in much deeper and more transcendent. I don’t usually quote from the cover of a book, but in this case I am compelled to break my rule: “This book opens the heart, enlivens the senses, and cleanses the mind.” Mathew Fox This is book is low key and understated but has had a very profound effect upon my attitudes and me. It has helped me to transcend a number of the deepest paradoxes of life and its meaning and how we ought to act. I leave you with the very profound observation made by Spotted Fawn, a Native American who explains to the author why she stepped in to stop her kitten from killing a baby frog, when the author asked her why she was getting in the way of the kittens natural instinct. She said: “When we’re here we’re part of the picture.”

The Holographic Universe
Michael Talbot
I can’t believe this book was published 13 years ago and no one, until recently, told me to read it. I think this is one of the best and most significant books I have ever read. Granted, I have an interest in physics, the mind, paranormal abilities, and of course the nature of reality or consciousness, but this book is so well-written and contains so much research and leading edge theories that I believe anyone and everyone who would read this book would love it almost as much as I did. Michael Talbot, the author, combines personal experience as someone who has paranormal or psychic abilities with a deep knowledge of the latest thinking of physicists. On top of this he has done an incredible job of gathering data and compiling resources about the paranormal abilities of the mind that should convince even the most skeptical reader that reality is much more complex than most materialists would care to admit. His research is well footnoted and has provided me with a number of books or articles I am looking forward to reading. I couldn’t put this book down. I found it very thrilling and inspiring. Although I don’t necessarily agree with all of the author’s suggestions and/or conclusions about this being a holographic universe, it is certainly something worth thinking about. More importantly his thorough and scientific treatment and fantastic documentation of such things as psychic phenomena, out of body experiences, and near death experiences are thrilling and introduce us on very subtle and deep levels to the really important issues about the nature of life and/or the purpose or meaning of life. I am definitely adding this book to my "Top-ten" list of the best and most important books I have ever read. I can't wait to read some of his other books! Review by Len Oppenheim.

A Year to Live: How to Live This Year as if it Were Your Last
Stephen Levine
In his new book, Stephen Levine, author of the perennial best-seller Who Dies? teaches us how to live each moment, each hour, each day mindfully—as if it were all that was left. On his deathbed, Socrates exhorted his followers to practice dying as the highest form of wisdom. Levine decided to live this way himself for a whole year, and now he shares with us how such immediacy radically changes our view of the world and forces us to examine our priorities. Most of us go to extraordinary lengths to ignore, laugh off, or deny the fact that we are going to die, but preparing for death is one of the most rational and rewarding acts of a lifetime. It is an exercise that gives us the opportunity to deal with unfinished business and enter into a new and vibrant relationship with life. Levine provides us with a year-long program of intensely practical strategies and powerful guided meditations to help with this work, so that whenever the ultimate moment does arrive for each of us, we will not feel that it has come too soon.

Power vs. Force: The Hidden Determinants of Human Behavior
David R Hawkins
Awaited for twenty years, the publication of Power vs. Force, by David R. Hawkins, M.D., finally reveals to the general public secret information heretofore only shared by the author with certain nobelists and world leaders. Analyzing the basic nature of human thought and consciousness itself, the author finally makes available to everyone the key to penetrating the last barrier to the advancement of civilization and science; he details how anyone may resolve for himself the most crucial of all human dilemmas—how to instantly determine the truth or falsehood of any statement or supposed fact. This author's boyhood spiritual experience of the "Infinite Presence" has directed his life work as a healing psychiatrist—a healing that transcends his patients' physical world. Dr. Hawkins's basic thesis focuses on the "Ultimate Presence"—the source from which individuals can reach their highest potential. He uses theoretical concepts from particle physics, nonlinear dynamics, and chaos theory to support his study of human behavior. The book is divided into 3 parts: Part 1 describes the process of moving toward one's ultimate potential. Dr. Hawkins then discusses his theory by explaining the progression from negative energy fields or attractors to positive attractors, which ultimately lead to pure consciousness. Based on 20 years of research, he has developed an intriguing map of consciousness, which in essence charts one's spiritual growth. The map outlines a listing of attitudes and emotions with corresponding calibrated numerical values. Feelings such as blame, anxiety, and hate fall into negative energy attractor fields; affirmation, trust, and optimism are examples of positive attractors that are life-enhancing and ultimately lead to pure consciousness. By applying principles from kinesiology and acupuncture, the author explains the association between positive attractor fields and one's health, well-being and creativity. Part 2 presents an extensive listing of adjectives that connote power vs. force patterns of human attitudes. It provides a basis for examining the quality of human interactions and relationships in various life endeavors, e.g., the marketplace, sports, the arts, health, and wellness. Part 3 focuses on the evolution and current state of man's consciousness, which Hawkins suggests is at the threshold of power after centuries of force. He posits that an individual's power and level of consciousness can be enhanced through greater integrity, understanding, and compassion. Readers will find themselves challenging methodology or various suppositions and being intrigued by others as the author relates the world of spirituality to the hidden dimensions of human behavior. Review by Elizabeth Hughes R.N., Ph.D., Former Dean of Georgetown University's School of Nursing She is a consultant in health education in the Baltimore/Washington DC area.

I: Reality and Subjectivity
David R. Hawkins
I concludes the presentation of a long-predicted major advance in critical human knowledge. It explains and describes the very substrate and essence of consciousness as it evolved from its primordial appearance as life on earth on up through evolution as the human ego, and hence, to the ego's transcendence as the spiritual Reality of Enlightenment and the Presence of Divinity. On the referenced Scale of the Levels of Consciousness, which calibrates the levels of Truth from 1 to 1,000, Power vs. Force calibrates at 850, The Eye of the I at 980, and the final volume of the trilogy, I, calibrates at a conclusive 999.8. The uncommon clarity and lucidity with which the highly evolved subject matter is presented facilitates the reader's understanding and comprehension. Some people experience Dr. Hawkins as the presence of a Bodhisattva. A Bodhisattva is one who works to overcome imperfections on the level of earth, and works with civilization as a whole, removing the dross that does not serve us and increases that which needs to be strengthened. In his presentation, he describes advanced states of consciousness and the way to Enlightenment. He incorporates sharing of dialogues with both beginning as well as advanced spiritual students worldwide. The nature of consciousness is described in terms that re-contextualize and simplify the spiritual process. The nonlinear reality of the enlightened sage is thereby made comprehensible to the reasoning mind. This exposition of the state of enlightenment is both unique and explicit in that it does not hide specifics in spiritual generalities, which has been the style of "traditional" spiritual classics. By analyzing the basic nature of human thought and the structure of the ego itself, Dr. Hawkins makes available to everyone the key to penetrating the last barrier to the advancement of civilization and science; he details how anyone may resolve for himself the most crucial of all human dilemmas—how to instantly determine the truth or falsehood of any statement or supposed fact. He then explains and describes the process of moving toward one's ultimate potential.

The Yoga of Time Travel: How the Mind Can Defeat Time
Fred Alan Wolf
I first saw and learned of Fred Alan Wolf when I saw the movie What the Bleep Do We Know? Wolf is the balding physicist with the white beard and eyeglasses sitting in front of the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco who was (in my opinion) the most entertaining of the expert commentators in this fine flick. Recently I attended a conference on "Physics and Consciousness" where Wolf was the keynote speaker and set the tone for the whole conference. He is brilliant, witty, and very entertaining. Wolf is one of the few mainstream physicists who has had the courage to bridge the narrow gap between leading edge quantum physics thought and spirituality. His clear exposition of the concept of the non-locality of consciousness and how consciousness exists outside of and independent of the brain is enough to make him a hero in my estimation. This book has enough of Wolf's wit, wisdom, and gestalt to make it worth reading. However, I will issue the cautionary note that this book is more for the aficionado than the dabbler. I have been reading many books by physicists and cosmologists over the last couple of years. For the most part, despite my lack of scientific or mathematical background, I was able to follow and understand most of these books. However, I found some of the concepts, ideas, and examples in this book to be impossible to understand and follow. Yet, there were enough insights and conclusions that made sense to me to make me feel like it was worth reading. I would suggest that before reading this book you start with other books in this subject area that we have reviewed on this website. Wolf has written a number of other books, and these earlier books may be easier to understand. Review by Len Oppenheim

From Science to God: A Physicists' Journey into the Mystery of Consciousness
Peter Russell
Peter Russell is a marvelous human being and an excellent writer. Russell has degrees in physics and experimental psychology. He also learned to practice TM and attended a teacher-training course with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, in Rishikesh, India. In this book he recounts experiences from both his formal education and his personal explorations of consciousness. The book is short but very sweet. It seems to come at least as much from the heart as from the intellect. Peter Russell has taken some very complex subjects and brought them to a level where everyone can understand them. The essence of this book is that the Western paradigm, that matter created consciousness, is backwards. In fact, the objective evidence from physics and the subjective evidence from explorations into consciousness make it quite clear that matter was created by Consciousness. The book is very simple and elegant. I would think just about anyone would enjoy reading it. It will certainly give the reader food for thought about who he or she is, and what "reality" on the outside may or may not be. If you want to gain insights into consciousness, the mystical experience, cosmology, and how they can be integrated from both an objective and subjective point of view, this is a book for you. The Self-Aware Universe: How Consciousness Creates the Material World
Amit Goswami
Consciousness, not matter, is the ground of all existence, declares University of Oregon physicist Goswami, echoing the mystic sages of his native India. He holds that the universe is self-aware, and that consciousness creates the physical world. Calling this theory "monistic idealism," he claims it is not only "the basis of all religions worldwide" but also the correct philosophy for modern science. Once people give up the assumption that there is an objective reality independent of consciousness, the paradoxes of quantum physics are explainable, contends Goswami. He also applies his hypothesis to the so-called mind-body schism, which he attempts to heal. Sketching a model of the self, this demanding but rewarding treatise uses analogies from the "new physics" to throw light on choice, free will, creativity, the unconscious, and paths to spiritual growth. The Lazy Way to Success: How to Do Nothing and Accomplish Everything
Fred Gratzon
Local Entrepreneur and self-confessed "laziest man in North America" debunks the commonly accepted notion that hard works brings success and argues that doing less is what actually accomplishes more.
The Lazy Way to Success: How to Do Nothing and Accomplish Everything, is a uniquely insightful self-help book, illustrated with humorous caricatures, and which presents a very strong message—frantically working yourself to fragments is not the way to success and happiness. Instead, self-improvement and self-enhancement arises from using our mind, from choosing carefully the work that needs to be done, from seeking solutions at a subtler level than the problem, and from avoiding the insanity of unnecessary work at all costs. Featuring a wisdom that is reminiscent of (and in some ways similar to) Taoism, The Lazy Way to Success is a very highly recommended self-help guide. —Midwest Book Review You have to read Fred Gratzon's hilarious look at the work ethic. I recommend this entertaining, insightful book on how, indeed, to be successful while still holding onto your inner child, discovering your true calling, and thoroughly enjoying your life. —Alan Caruba, Editor, Bookviews.com The Lazy Way to Success is a book filled with golden nuggets of opportunity for success of any kind. And it's a fun read. In fact, it is really a funny book though the message is serious. The cartoon-like illustrations, done by Lawrence Sheaff, are alone worth the price of the book. They're a big part of what makes the book so entertaining. Their depiction throughout the book of Fred Gratzon in his hammock is as realistic as one can imagine, I'm sure. The comic commentaries that accompany the drawings are fabulously fun. You'll want to read every one, and you'll refer back to many as you share parts of this book with friends. I'll refer back to this book over and over again, and plan on giving it to a few college graduates this spring so they can learn early what many of us have spent years trying to figure out. I think Gratzon does have it pretty much figured out. And I feel good about my own future as I try to follow The Lazy Way to Success for myself. —Carla Offenburger Extraordinary humor, charm, artistry, and wisdom. I couldn't put this book down! It's brilliant! —Gayatri Lee, Editor, Spirit of the Smokies Unbelievable! I got hooked on it. I couldn't stop until I was finished. Outstanding book! The one problem I had with it was when I was finished I wanted more. I'm excited. I want to give this book to anybody who walks. It is beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. Congratulations. I am in love with your book. Absolutely. It is wonderful. —Dr. Ichak Adizes, Management Consultant and Best-selling Business Book Author I read it and I loved it. The Lazy Way to Success is everything you don't think it will be—and more. And even so, it is everything. —David Lynch, Hollywood Director The Lazy Way to Success is a highly-acclaimed, hilarious, and insightful book about how to become a high achiever—even a rich one—while having a ton of fun and treating those around you right. —Chuck Offenburger The most important book on success to come down the road in a long time! Funny, with a philosophical depth. This book is a soothing balm. —Die Welt, Germany Wisdom, wisdom, and more wisdom. Gratzon cleverly takes you through his rationale with some pretty impressive arguments. If nothing more, the logic makes you turn the pages. The Reality of Time
Janet Iris Sussman
"Janet Sussman has written two deeply intuitive, highly metaphorical, and overwhelmingly intellectual descriptions of what I believe is the nature of time. She relates time to a sacred dimension of existence that few of us have access to. She has made a brave attempt to describe the indescribable as St. Augustine once realized. However, readers should be prepared to use their thinking caps when reading this." —Fred Alan Wolf, Ph.D. National Book Award-winning author of Taking the Quantum Leap, The Spiritual Universe, Mind into Matter, Matter into Feeling, and many other books "Janet Sussman possesses an uncanny grasp of a broud range of important concepts of science and metaphysics, as well as an unsurpassed command of the tools of the English language. The rich tapestry of structure and content that she has crafted in The Reality of Time reflects her vast experience in meditative practices, introspection, self-observation, and analysis. She also possesses the unique innate ability to articulate her ideas. In this book she has managed to produce a supreme, mind-altering exposition of the important concepts of time and consciousness." —Ashish Chatterjee Ph.D. in theoretical nuclear physics; computing and telecommunications systems expert About the authorJanet Iris Sussman is the author of Timeshift: The Experience of Dimensional Change (1996), a preliminary work to The Reality of Time. For over a quarter of a century, she has experimented with higher developmental processes of creativity during waking, dreaming, and meditative states. The expression of complex inter-dimensional concepts in written and oral form is her passion and her art. Janet is also a spiritual counselor, healer, and musician. She gives seminars and transformational music concerts throughout the United States.

Tantra - Mantra - Yantra in Dance
Ranjana Srivastava
The Indian perspective has always been holistic and all-inclusive: thought and activity in different fields, at different levels, have been interlinked to produce what has been timeless. Indian art is a classic example of such amalgamation: it interlinks aspects of art, philosophy, mythology, religion, and mysticism. This book is an attempt to unravel such links with specific reference to the kathaka dance form. Dr. Ranjana Srivastava explores the roots of kathaka dance form to reveal its sublime, philosophic, esoteric and divine dimensions. Focusing on inter-relationships, she unfolds how dance embraces other disciplines of yoga, tantra, mantra, and yantra. She discusses the concept of tantra and its approximation and application to the dance form—the way kathaka absorbed the sacred knowledge within its form. She deals with the importance and aspects of sound in the Hindu religious scheme and its manifestation in kathaka. Explaining the significance of the yantra as a diagrammatic/geometric representation and the way it functions, she analyses the techniques of kathaka which create distinct yantra formations both in the physical movements of the dancer in the surrounding space as well as on the dancing floor. The study abounds in extensive notes to explain numerous terms and concepts and has references to noted works and authors on the subject.

BABA: Autobiography of a Blue-Eyed Yogi
Rampuri
I have read almost every book that I can get my hands on which describes the journeys or pilgrimages of seekers looking for Truth, Enlightenment, or "The Holy Grail." Most of them I enjoy. Most of them I recommend. Most of them have a great deal in common. This one is quite unique, and it will definitely keep you interested and give you insights you will not have read elsewhere. Rampuri (the given name of the American author, born in 1950 in Chicago, and raised in Beverly Hills) is the name given to the author when he took the vows as a Sanyassin and became a true yogi in a little known (by Westerners) ancient tradition of wisdom in India. Some of us, familiar with the Naga Baba's, who get famous every 12 years or so when there is a big Kumbha Mela in Allahabad, may know a tiny bit about this ancient and honorable tradition, but for the first time, the practices, knowledge, and day to day lifestyle of the Babas is presented from an insider's viewpoint. I can't really begin to describe this book, this incredible journey. It is very authentic and will really blow your mind. This is clearly a unique story and has some very unique knowledge and experiences contained in it. Rampuri was 19 when he arrived in India in 1969. He was 20 years old when he met Hari Puri Baba, who became his guru. Rampuri was the first and perhaps only foreigner initiated in Juna Akhara, the ancient order of the Renunciates of the Ten Names. In 1984 Rampuri established his own ashram in Hardwar. Rampuri has clearly gone places, done things, and arrived at certain knowledge that few, if any Westerners have ever experienced. I think anyone who reads this book is in for a treat and will certainly experience a few "eye-openers." There is a big dose of mysticism and quite an interesting angle on the Vedas that flow from Rampuri. The book must be read, as I feel inadequate to do justice in trying to describe the uniqueness and esoteric aspects of the journey. Review by Len Oppenheim

My Life in Orange: Growing Up with the Guru
Tim Guest
My Life in Orange: Growing Up with the Guru is a unique account of the author's experiences as a child, growing up in ashrams, or communes, of his mother's guru, Bhagwan Rajneesh, later known as Osho. Tim Guest is a very skilled writer and seems to be gifted with an extraordinary ability to recall his childhood experiences and feelings. Rajneesh/Osho was famous (perhaps infamous is a better term) for being the "sex guru" with a mischievous grin whose aborted experiment in Oregon (where he owned and drove ninety-three Rolls Royce automobiles) ended with criminal trials and his ouster from the U.S. If you have an interest in Osho, or just want to find out what it was like to grow up in a commune, this is definitely a book for you. I thoroughly enjoyed this unique memoir, and found it riveting, informative, and even, at times, quite humorous. Guest's humor and insight is revealed in the following statement: "… it was apparent to us— the kids as well as the adults—that the world at large had begun to use the term 'Bhagwan' as shorthand for 'flamboyant religious conman'." If you don't know much about Osho, or wish to learn more about this fascinating character, I also highly recommend Autobiography of a Spiritually Incorrect Mystic. Review by Len Oppenheim London journalist Guest (The Guardian; The Daily Telegraph) shares the bittersweet story of his nomadic childhood as a member of the sannyasin, a group of people who swathed themselves in orange and lived in the various communes of the infamous Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. In 1979, when Guest was six, he was brought into the group by his mother, a lapsed Catholic who "surrendered herself to the world without a second thought," moving to England, Germany, India, and Oregon to work for the cause of Bhagwan's Eastern mysticism (which involved, among other things, engaging in sexual freedom and inhaling laughing gas.) Guest played with the ragtag children of the hippie adults working in these ashrams, sometimes going for long periods of time without his mother's love or guidance. He systematically observes the daily lives of the sannyasin and their master, refusing to trash the devotees or their spiritual beliefs, instead targeting the manipulations of Bhagwan, whom he depicts as a power-mad holy man who taught restraint, poverty, and obedience yet collected Rolls-Royces and told jokes "cribbed from Playboy." Guest forgives his neglectful mother as he records Bhagwan's fall from grace through American tax evasion, lawsuits, and denials of admittance from country to country until his empire crumbled. Honest and vivid, this is an absorbing book about survival and good intentions gone awry. © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier, Inc.

The Little Book of Bleeps: Quotations from the Movie What the Bleep Do We Know!?
William Arntz and Betsy Chasse
For thousands of years, the inner teachings of all great religions have expressed the idea that human beings—each of us—create our own reality. That is, that the life we experience is a function of our own belief system and mental processes. "As ye believe, so shall it be." They have also taught that the life we experience is like a dream, insubstantial. Now, leading edge science (quantum physics) is proposing the very same notions: that our physical reality is more like "information"—similar to a thought—than like anything else. And that physical reality consists mostly of empty space. Furthermore, mind-body scientists (neurophysiologists) are learning more about the profound and pervasive effects that our minds have on our physical bodies. In What the Bleep Do We Know?!, 14 top scientists, theologians, and mystics explain "how this all works," as we follow Amanda, an anxious, depressed professional photographer played by Academy Award-winner Marlee Matlin, through her awakening and transformation. The Little Book of Bleeps captures many of the most enlightening sayings and impacting graphics from the film. William Arntz and Betsy Chasse are two of the three filmmakers of What the Bleep Do We Know?! Arntz, formerly a successful software entrepreneur, was the film's original visionary and driving force. He is also the project's sole financier. Betsy Chasse was a successful feature film producer in Hollywood. Shortly after she determined that she only wanted to work on projects of significance and meaning, What the Bleep Do We Know?! was presented to her. Arntz and Chasse have personally selected all the excerpts and images that appear in the book.

Living Faith: Windows into the Sacred Life of India
Dinesh Khanna
The stunning photographs in Living Faith are the result of over a decade and a half of travel and observation. From the cities, small towns, and villages of India—a country of almost unparalleled diversity where every major religion of the world has found a home—Dinesh Khanna brings us images of faith as it endures in everyday life. Priests light up the night on the ghats of Varanasi in honor of Shiva; Sufis sing ecstatic love songs to Allah at the tomb of Nizamuddin Auliya; young boys in Ladakh prepare for the austere life of a Buddhist Lama; and devotees offer wax models of what they desire to Mary at her church in Mumbai. Meanwhile, on the highways and lanes of India, taxi and truck drivers carry on their dashboards little shrines to their gods; Jain nuns walk barefoot for miles on an eternal pilgrimage; and people stop along busy roads to offer prayers at modest temples and tombs. Living Faith is an intimate, revealing record of a deeply spiritual way of life. It acknowledges the strength of private worship and shared faith, which ultimately transcends the more visible but short-lived realities of discord.

The "God" Part of the Brain: A Scientific Interpretation of Human Spirituality and God
Matthew Alper
The "God" Part of the Brain: A Scientific Interpretation of Human Spirituality and God, by Matthew Alper, is a book which is faithful to its title. Alper makes the case that "our species is unique… humans possess what we could call 'spiritual' needs. No less than our bodies crave food, we long to understand our purpose in the universe, our reason for being." He also points out that "every human culture has perceived reality as consisting of two distinct substances or realms: the physical and the spiritual." Taking the above two premises as his starting point, and then examining both cultural and individual spirituality from the point of view of materialistic science (starting with the assumption that matter produces consciousness and the human brain is a product of Darwinian evolution) Alper does a great job of marshalling his evidence that man's concepts and experiences of "God" come very specific areas of and the neurophysiology of the brain. His basic point is: "all that we perceive as "real" is nothing more than electrical signals as they interpreted by our brain." His somewhat controversial conclusion is that the human being is "hard-wired" to believe in a spirit world and God. Alper is brilliant. The book is very well written, easy to follow, and very easy to understand. I highly recommend it to anyone who thinks this is a topic of interest. Personally I fault the book because Alper dismisses offhandedly all evidence of matter being a function of consciousness. Clearly I think anyone who reads this book ought to get a balanced opinion by reading one of my all-time favorite books, The Holographic Universe, by Michael Talbot. I really enjoyed the book and got a lot out of it. Some of the data about mystic experiences and drug-induced states is really fascinating. This book really can stimulate the intellect and it provides ample food for thought. I would really urge anyone with an interest in spirituality and biology or neurophysiology to read this book.

The GOD Gene: How Faith Is Hardwired into Our Genes
Dean Hamer
The GOD Gene: How Faith Is Hardwired into Our Genes, by Dean Hamer, argues that "spirituality is one of our basic human inheritances. It is, in fact, an instinct." The author is a leading geneticist. He uses the scientific method to first define or set up criteria for "spirituality" which is quite different from religion. He comes up with a term "self-transcendence" which he defines and then develops criteria to measure. In many ways it is similar to what Abraham Maslow called "self-actualization." The author is a dedicated scientist and his methodology is not only very rigorous but also painstakingly explained. His mission is to discover: "why humans believe, not whether those beliefs are true." He uses numerous studies, including very persuasive evidence from studies of twins separated at birth, to marshal evidence to buttress his ultimate conclusion that spirituality, self-transcendence, and even mysticism are at least predominately an inherited proposition, and thus hard-wired into the genes. I found the story of "The Good Friday Experiment," conducted in 1962, fascinating and quite instructive. It was a carefully randomized double-blind placebo experiment using Psilocybin and quantifying its effect on mystical experiences, with a follow up done 25 years later. Hamer addresses some very interesting topics, such as: "Can consciousness be explained scientifically?" He is very careful to be fair in his treatment of this subject and correctly points out that many who argue that consciousness is solely produced by the brain start out with a mechanistic model of the universe, which is postulated rather than proved. His lengthy discussion of the Y chromosome and its relevance to the Jewish people is very fascinating. All in all, I really liked this book and respect the author's conclusions, which are: "that there is nothing intrinsically theistic or atheistic about postulating a specific genetic and biochemical mechanism for spirituality" and "that spirituality is genetic, while religion is based on culture, traditions, beliefs, and ideas."

Why God Won't Go Away: Brain Science and the Biology of Belief
Andrew Newburg, M.D., Eugene D'Aquili, M.D., Ph.D., and Vince Rause
Why God Won't Go Away: Brain Science & The Biology of Belief, by Andrew Newberg, M.D., Eugene D'Aquili, M.D., Ph.D., and Vince Rause is an exceptional book which I very highly recommend. This is very fascinating exposition of the relationship between religious experience and brain functioning. Topics like "The Science of Perception," "How the Brain Makes the Mind," and "The Biology of Transcendence" are among the fascinating topics explored and explained in a manner that is very comprehensible by the layperson. You don't need to be a doctor, scientist, or a yogi to understand this book. The authors get into some very profound issues. These guys are scientists who buy the whole "materialistic science" viewpoint, which encompasses a strict belief in evolution and that consciousness comes from matter; the brain. However, they are open enough to include data and thoughts that maybe there are other possible explanations. Ultimately, the book is straightforward, honest, and I found it to be a "must read". They conclude that science and religion do not have to be incompatible. They conclude that our brain is structured to include "mystical experiences" which, from the point of view of a neurophysiologist, are just as "real" as non-mystical experiences. What I liked about the book was that the authors were very clear about laying out the limitations of science and the scientific method.

I Need Your Love- Is That True?
Byron Katie, Michael Katz
How to Stop Seeking Love, Approval, and Appreciation and Start Finding Them Instead Katie reintroduces the form of self-questioning called "The Work" that she originally presented in Loving What Is, but here she tackles relationships—and what spoils them. According to Katie (writing with the help of Katz, who is also her agent), rather than seeking love and approval from others, you need to find them in yourself. What often blocks that love is one's perception of reality: "If you believe your stressful thoughts, your life is filled with stress. But if you question your thoughts, you come to love your life and everyone in it." "The Work" is central to the process of taking a judgmental thought—such as "my partner is supposed to make me happy"—and subjecting it to four powerful questions, such as "Is it true?" and "Who or what would I be without the thought?" Then Katie suggests turning the thought around and considering different options, such as making yourself happy and making your partner happy. Finally, she suggests ways to find love and acceptance in yourself. Katie's chatty style and her use of detailed dialogues and simple exercises will make many readers feel transformation is inevitable. The New Quotable Einstein
Albert Einstein Collected and edited by Alice Calaprice
Einstein's theories changed the way 20th century mankind viewed the universe. Einstein was not only a Nobel Prize winning scientist, he was a cultural icon. Whether or not you understand Special Relativity or General Relativity, you know that Einstein changed the world as we know it. I am a fan of Einstein, and as a layman have been fascinated by quantum theory and relativity. From time to time I have been deeply impressed or moved by quotes I have read from Einstein. This book puts it all together. This is much better than a biography or autobiography. The editor has done a nearly perfect job of selecting and organizing quotes from Einstein so that the reader can understand his life, his intellect, his politics, and his spirituality. This is a book that everyone will enjoy and profit from. It is fun to read and can be kept by the bedside (or even the john) and digested bit by bit for maximum entertainment and enlightenment. As the reader will learn, Einstein is a mere mortal, and has human faults and foibles, but as the reader will also learn, Einstein is a person of great depth and breadth. Review by Len Oppenheim

The Golden Frog
Michael Mamas
A few months ago a read a book that really touched me. I normally read non-fiction and like to study, in a general way, things like physics, joytish, vaastu, palmistry etc. A friend, who was awestruck, told me I had to read The Golden Frog, a novel by Dr. Michael Mamas. It's one of those novels where you know every word is true. It's the story of a young boy, born in Ohio, who grows up to be a great spiritual teacher in the Vedic tradition of Enlightened teachers. I understand that in real life Dr. Mamas, while a student at Ohio State, began to experience different levels of enlightenment, but had never heard the word enlightenment. Eventually he found Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and sold his Vet practice to study privately, for about 10 years, with various teachers that Maharishi sent him to. The novel conveys his life experiences and seems to be an attempt by someone who will likely become a well known teacher to say, "Hey I'm over here." Review by Randy Connare The Golden Frog, by Michael Mamas, is a unique piece of didactic fiction which will never find its way onto any "best seller" lists, but which will provide pleasure and insight to many who read it. On the cover of the book a reviewer describes it as "The Hardy Boys meet Harry Potter in a spiritual adventure that's ahead of its time." While reading it, I had the thought that it could best be described as "Narcissus and Goldman Lite." The dual protagonists, Bruce and Nathaniel, grow up in Beaver Cleaver world in an Ohio suburb. Bruce eventually becomes a practicing psychologist while Nathaniel seeks enlightenment in India, eventually returns to become a veterinarian and finally a spiritual mentor. While at times I was a little put off by the didactic and stylized form used by the author, in the end the sweetness, wisdom, and connection to Truth won me over. I really enjoyed reading this book and very highly recommend it. Review by Len Oppenheim

Truth vs. Falsehood: How To Tell The Difference
David R. Hawkins, MD, PhD
The long awaited 4th book by Dr. David R Hawkins , author of best selling Power vs. Force. This book's exploration into the truth of man's activities is unique, intriguing, and provocative. From a new perspective, one quickly grasps the levels of truth expressed by the media, the arts, writers, painters, architecture, movies, TV, politics, and war, as well as academia and the greatest thinkers and philosophies through the ages and up to present-day science, and advanced theories of the nature of the universe. Most importantly, the ego and its structure are revealed to facilitate the understanding of religious and spiritual truths expressed by the mystics and enlightened sages over the centuries. It becomes apparent why the human mind, unaided, has been intrinsically incapable of discerning truth from falsehood. A simple test is described that, in seconds, can solve riddles that have been irresolvable by mankind for centuries. This book delivers far more than it promises.

Shut Up! An Ancient Mantra for Complete Happiness
Dvorah Adler
The Simple Truth Your Guru, Therapist and Grandmother Forgot to Tell YouAfter reading the Shut Up book, I feel as if I was finally given a true taste of what spiritual practices are all about. Can you imagine? After 40 years, I finally feel unconditionally happy (at least, I have for the past couple of days) and amazingly at ease. Dvorah (who made me feel as if we're good friends) combines deep insight with fun and razor-sharp humor, to bring us an inspirational and transformational book that leaves us content and comfortable with our life's circumstances. This book is for people who've been struggling with their self esteem, mental outlook, and daily spiritual practices for a long time, and have still come up empty-handed. Her chapters read like my life story: When will it get better? Why do I make the same mistakes over and over again? When will I ever learn? After all my meditations and therapy, why am I still so angry? Where is my soul mate? When will I be enlightened? And my personal favorite: How many past lives have I had, and how many more do I need to be free? This book is not only immensely entertaining, but offers a fresh perspective on some well known, overly analyzed and debated topics. The Shut Up book, as I like to call it, is a pleasant surprise in the field of spiritual, self-help, and New Age books. It goes back to the basic, intuitive knowledge that we've all been born with, but have forgotten in the multitude of knowledge and practices that are available these days. She touches us deeply with love and humor, the kind that makes you move through another day, without regret or wishful thinking, helping us remember how much fun it can be. I highly recommend this book to anyway who has ever asked the question, "Who am I, what am I doing here, and where am I going?" Review by Angela Sandoval

I think that the author of this book, Swanson, is a soul-mate of mind. He seems driven by the same motives and interests. The difference is that I just read about things and he has actually done the work, done the studies, and compiled them into this most remarkable book. Swanson is obviously bright (MIT undergraduate degree) and accomplished (Ph.D. and other advanced degrees in physics from Princeton and Cornell.) Furthermore his hero, the Nobel Prize winning physicist Richard Feynman, is also my personal hero. Here in Swanson's own words is his approach to life, which is reflected in this book: I often wonder how my physics education would have been different if, instead of conducting experiments on radioactivity and superconductivity, for which physics has very good theories, if I had taken the same equipment and gone to a haunted house! Or measured the energy fields around healers as they worked. Then, instead of confirming the science of the textbook, I would have measured things that defy the textbooks. Unfortunately, my curriculum did not include such adventures, and it was ten years later before I got around to those more unconventional pursuits But it is an important lesson for all scientists. Our educational curriculum is designed to convince that the theories in the book are true. There are no organized curricula in physics departments which encourage the student to seek out the strange places and events that break the rules. Science has no clue about what consciousness is, for example. There is no adequate physical theory of it, and yet each one of us has one (it?). It is familiar but inexplicable. In this book we have reviewed other subjects which science cannot explain: the out-of-body experience, remote viewing, ESP, prophecy (knowledge of the future), the effects of group consciousness… and psycho kinesis (PK) to name a few. These have been proven repeatedly in laboratory experiments over decades, with the rules of scientific statistics and controls. By any objective measure, they are real phenomena. [Emphasis added] So, that pretty much tells you where the author is coming from and what this book is about. All that I will add is that it is remarkably readable and the data and experiments chosen are fascinating and often mind-blowing. Swanson is not only an accomplished scientist; but he has obviously done his homework on the spiritual side, citing references from many profound sources. I loved this book!! I hope you will give it a try. Whether you are a believer or a skeptic, a seeker or a finder, a scientist or a layman, I am almost certain you will enjoy the data and the presentation. The Science of Getting Rich
Wallace D. Wattles
As the title of Wattles' work suggests, this book is first and foremost a guide to acquiring wealth. However there is more to life than achieving financial success, and that is why the author also treats the successful life in general. After making the fundamental claim that everyone has the right to be rich, he puts forward his principles for practical action, aimed to "make the most of yourself." These principles include acting efficiently and getting into the right business, as well as expressing gratitude. The single most important principle stated by the author is creativity. Throughout the book he focuses on the power of thought, and shows how to use willpower for achieving goals. Pointing out that life is a self-fulfilling prophecy, he advocates the purposeful direction of thought and action. According to Wattles, the philosophy of the book is based on a monistic viewpoint of the universe, which is also the foundation of oriental philosophy. Because all of life is connected, the author discourages competition and urges the reader to create value instead. By getting rich in a creative way, no harm is done to other people; on the contrary, others will benefit from the inspiration that comes from the successful person. Arguing strongly in the tradition of John Ruskin that there is no wealth but life, Wattles with his work has created the ancestor of many a modern self-help and personal finance book.

India: Mirror of Truth: A Seven Year Pilgrimage
Steve Briggs
India: Mirror of Truth is the true story of an American Purusha (celibate devotee of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi) sent to India by Maharishi to teach meditation. The author's life-transforming seven-year spiritual odyssey took him from the coastal waters of Kerala to the high Tibetan plateau. Along the way, he encountered saints and shamans, politicians and pundits, astrologers and ascetics, villagers and artisans. He visited ancient holy sites, met swamis living at the source of the Ganges, participated in arcane purificatory rituals, experienced the excitement of thirty million pilgrims at the Kumbha Mela as guest of a maharaja, initiated India's elite into meditation, and shared the company of lamas at Tibetan monasteries in Ladakh in an awesome journey that is as culturally rich as it is spiritually stirring. Former University of Arizona athletic star and tennis coach, Steve Briggs, spent 21 years on Purusha, his last seven teaching Indian managers to meditate. After seven years teaching meditation in India, the author settled into a remote ashram in the Himalaya before returning to the west in 2002 where he wrote India: Mirror of Truth. Steve lives in Fairfield, Iowa with his wife, Bhumi, and her son.

Deeksha: The Fire from Heaven
Kiara Windrider
"Enlightenment is very easy," says Bhagavan, "and everyone should get enlightened." This quote is lifted from the back cover of perhaps the most remarkable book I have ever read. The author, Kiara Windrider, describes his experiences of enlightenment along with the experiences of many others. This "gift" of enlightenment comes from an Indian man of God, formerly known as "Kalki," but now self-described as "Bhagavan." The enlightening process is a transmission of energy called deeksha. Bhagavan says that enlightenment is a neurobiological process, and that all it takes is a little adjustment in the brain, which then allows the cosmic energies to flow through and dissolve the concept that we carry around of a separately existing "self," which is in fact only an illusion of perception. The book claims that we are entering into a new, golden age and enlightenment will be more and more easily attained. The book is well written, the experiences of enlightenment are compelling and credible, and I would think that any "spiritual seeker" would find this book fascinating and perhaps most inspiring. Translations of Rumi's writings by the contemporary poet Coleman Barks have sold more than 500,000 copies since 1981. Now acclaimed illustrator Michael Green—who collaborated with Barks on The Illuminated Rumi (Broadway Books)—has produced a new and fabulous mystic fusion of sacred poetry and art. This all-new volume features rare poems of Rumi, some of which have never before been translated. There are many collections of Rumi's poetry, but few are illustrated and none as beautifully as this full-color book.

Signs of the Times: The End of the World and the Coming Golden Age
Robert Fitzgerald
The author presents a fascinating account of how time and history follow an astrological structure. This structure consists of astrological ages that are chronicled from before the Age of Cancer, and the invention of agriculture around the world, to the present end of the Age of Pisces, and the much-prophesied apocalyptic end of the world. Within this pattern an end-time cycle emerges that explains the Apocalyptic energies we see around us today. Astrology also promises, in the coming Age of Aquarius, a new golden age and gives us indications of what needs to be done to survive the end-time.

Where God Lives: The Science of the Paranormal and How Our Brains Are Linked to the Universe
Melvin Morse, M.D., with Paul Perry
Every so often we discover a little gem of a book that is so good, so sweet, and so universal that we take great pleasure in recommending it to everyone. Where God Lives is the perfect example of a perfect little book. The author, Melvin Morse, M.D. is a pediatrician who practices in Seattle. Early in his medical career he encountered a case of a child who recovered after a Near Death Experience (NDE.) This led him to seek out and treat numerous children who had NDE's. This book relates his experiences with these unique patients, and what they taught him about life, consciousness, the brain, and spirituality. Whether you consider yourself a "spiritual person," or a scientific materialist, the data and conclusions in this book will be well worth considering. Morse's data and conclusion concerning the functioning of the right temporal lobe of the brain and how it can shape one's perceptions of reality and relationship to humanity and the universe are fascinating and enlightening. I give this book my highest recommendation for all readers from all walks of life. Review by Len Oppenheim

Transcending the Levels of Consciousness
David R Hawkins
Transcending the Levels of Consciousness, explores the ego's expressions and inherent limitations and gives detailed explanations and instructions on how to transcend them. It expands the understanding of the levels of consciousness, as presented in the now widely known Map of Consciousness. This book focuses on the individual, and studies the experiential, subjective blocks to the advancement of consciousness that leads to progressive spiritual awareness and on to higher levels of consciousness—preparatory to advanced states, such as Enlightenment itself. By analyzing the various obstacles and levels to be transcended, certain principles that support spiritual evolution are self-revealing. This book is a practical manual rather than a comprehensive analysis.

A Brief Tour of Higher Consciousness: A Cosmic Book on the Mechanics of Creation
Itzhak Bentov
A Brief Tour of Higher Consciousness, by Itzhak Bentov is the best (and most fun) introduction to the modern idea of Enlightenment combined with quantum physics that I have ever come across. And I have been swimming in these "Enlightenment" waters for over 35 years now. This is the same Itzhak Bentov who, on his last plane ride, as he was boarding the plane, realized that no one on the plane had an aura and he knew that they were all destined to crash. He got on the plane anyway because he knew it was time to move on to greater things. Please just treat this as a rumor. This little book of 113 pages is light, fun, profound, and mathematical. The author relates the ultimate meaning of the Universe with both the Hebrew and Sanskrit alphabets. Every single one of you should own this book, or at least read it. I especially like the chapter about the Devas because it so closely parallels my own experience. The subtitle of this tome is also revealing: "A Cosmic Book on the Mechanics of Creation." Wonderful. Secrets in the Fields: The Science & Mysticism of Crop Circles
Freddy Silva
Silva, who has worked in graphic design and advertising for most of his professional life, conveys his keen passion for earth mysticism in this probing examination of crop circles. He examines the history of crop circles, human interactions with them, their probable implications, and, in a section that is alone worth the price of the books for supporters, their effects on our current worldview. Silva also delves deeply into the evidence for crop circles' authenticity. In arguing that they are transhuman events, he discusses the role of electromagnetism and its effects, UFO phenomena and their relation to crop circles, the relationship between crop circles and healing, evidence supporting psychic ability, and language's ability to affect information consciously and subconsciously (this section is sure to stimulate those who suspect that crop circles are a hoax). Readers may be inspired to reexamine preconceived ideas, as Silva's explanations are detailed and well researched and avoid technical jargon. Footnotes and an extensive bibliography encourage further exploration.

The Yantras of Deities and their Numerological Foundations
Frederick W. Bunce
“The author, an internationally known scholar of oriental art, examines a range of tantric yantras, with their varieties, applications, modes of construction and, above all, their iconographic features. Also inter-woven in his text are lucid descriptions of all else associated with a yantra, notably, its deity, its specific purpose, its predominant and secondary numbers and its mantra. Carrying beautiful visual representations of over a hundred yantras, Professor Bunce's study holds out enduring appeal to the readers concerned not only with the iconography of tantric yantras, but their mystifying under-pinnings as well." The Head Trip: Adventures on the Wheel of Consciousness
Jeff Warren
This is one of those very rare non-fiction books that is so easy to read and so interesting and well framed that it sucks the reader into its web just like a great novel. The first 150 pages or so deals with the nature of sleep. The neurology, the physiology and the subjective experiences are all dealt with in a coherent and personalized manner. I can’t begin to explain how fascinating it is to learn so much about sleep, something which we so take for granted, and yet which is so little understood. This was truly an amazing section; funny, entertaining, and full of science and insights that are so good I would call them “gifts” from the author. Most of us have some familiarity with the concepts of deep sleep and REM sleep. Few of us I would venture to say, know much if anything about the Hypnagogic, The Watch, The Lucid Dream, The Trance, The SMR, or The Pure Conscious Event. Each of the above is the subject of a chapter in the book. Each chapter is fascinating and enlightening. I really feel enriched by the lessons about sleep and even find myself enjoying the act of going to sleep, sleeping, and even waking in the middle of the night now that I understand so much more about it. If the book was complete with only the final chapter on sleep that would be more than enough to recommend this as one of the best books I have read in many years. I feel that I cannot emphasize enough how reading this book has enhanced my experiences and enjoyment of going to sleep, sleeping, and even waking up! What is particularly charming about this book is that the author has not only done an excellent job of researching the subject, more importantly he has made himself a guinea pig, participating in a number of studies and experimenting with various techniques himself. His experiences and commentaries are very rich and most fascinating. But there is more, as the author goes on to explore the waking state and its many nuances. His exploration of hypnosis, day dreams, SMR, and a newer more sophisticated form of neurofeedback covers fascinating territories with the same thoroughness, insightfulness, and personal participation as his studies of the sleep states. This is one of those books I want everyone to read. I hope many of you will enjoy this as much as I did. The last book I felt this strongly about, in terms of its universal appeal was The Omnivore’s Dilemma. Review by Len Oppenheim 20% off hardcover price

The Mystical I
Joel Goldsmith
An Advaita book from the Christian perspective. Joel speaks of the risen Christ as a metaphor of our own resurrection to full embody the “I” dying to the small i. Using quotes from the New Testament Goldsmith shows us the obvious misinterpretations of many of the sacred words. Someone once told me that Goldsmith was initiated by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi
in the 60’s…though I cannot confirm that, Joel’s writing seems in synch with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi
philosophy. Here is my friend and Advaita teacher Michael Baxter’s commentary on The Mystical I “Finally, a little book that bridges the big gap between Christianity and Advaita Vedanta! “Although the ideas in this book are presented in Christian terms, they are clear expressions of Advaitic principles. At their very core is the assertion that I-ness itself is the key, both to understanding who or what God is and to one’s personal journey back to Him. According to Mr Goldsmith, we find in God the True I-ness, in Jesus the pure reflected I am-ness, and in man the familiar feeling of i-ness at the center of each experience. Here are a few of the pages on which Mr Goldsmith says something very interesting,
- p. 31 .. the ‘I’ of me is the ‘I’ of you .. I am recognizing your I-ness ..
- p. 39 ‘I’ is the presence of God .. that Self is ‘I’ .. ‘I’ is that very God ..
- p. 50 It is in this word, ‘I’, that you find the entire secret of the spiritual message given to the world by Jesus Christ …
- p. 50 Rightly interpreted, the words ‘I am the way’ mean … ‘I’ is the way …
- p. 51 Is there any He within you other than the ‘I’ of your own being … your own Self? …
- p. 57 The revelation of Jesus Christ is that ‘I’ is the way …
- p. 74 When you understand that Jesus used the word, ‘I’, in two different ways …
- p. 132 Again we come to that word, ‘I’, and the two ways of using it ..
These and many similar statements have helped me to appreciate both traditions and their essential unity. Whatever your faith is, I hope you’ll enjoy this small but potent book as much as I do. “ Review by Michael Baxter

Jill states that the stroke is the best thing that ever happened to her, having taught her that the feeling of nirvana is never more than a thought away. Her remarkable insights are, for me, verification of much of the true spiritual/Advaita literature. I found this to be a fascinating book.
“I was, by anyone’s standard, no longer normal. In my own unique way, I had become severely mentally ill. And I must say, there was both freedom and challenge for me in recognizing that our perception of the external world, and our relationship to it, is a product of neurological circuitry. For all those years of my life, I really had been a figment of my own imagination.” —Jill Bolte Taylor Review by Tony Kainauskas 20% off hardcover price

Creating the Soul Body: The Sacred Science of Immortality
Robert E. Cox
Former Purusha (celibate male follower of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi) Robert Cox's latest book has recently been published: Creating the Soul Body: The Sacred Science of Immortality
.
“Robert Cox maps the spiritual journey of consciousness and reveals the process of creating an immortal soul body. He also shows that this ancient spiritual knowledge (from Vedic, Egyptian and Hebraic traditions) resembles advanced theories of modern science, such as wave and particle theory and the unified field theory, and reveals that modern science is only now awakening to this ancient science of immortality.”
Robert goes on to explain how ancient civilizations were much more intelligent than our own, and how the ancients' science of consciousness surpasses even the most advanced physical theories of today.

The Phenomenon of Man
Pierre Teilhard de Chardin
This book is probably one of the most significant books written. Teilhard describes how ever expanding consciousness, which he calls the interior of things, powers the flow of evolution in an ever increasing expression of Being. De Chardin was trained as a scientist and paleontologist as well as being a Jesuit priest. He was the co-discoverer of Peking Man.
Teilhard systematically observes how there is a pattern in nature, moving from a simple aggregate of atoms, to a synthesis into molecules and into organic matter, finally resulting in self-reflective man. He postulates this inner nature as organizing the external nature of matter. This inner nature has the effect of being anti-entropic. With each step towards greater complexity there is a greater expression of consciousness, which he defines as the ability to make a greater number of responses to a given stimuli. Eventually, with man, the possible number of responses becomes infinite, as mankind has the ability to self reflect, and thus consciously effect the direction of evolution. As a culmination, he speculates on the next possible step in evolution past mankind, which would be a synthesis of humanity where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, and each individual is completely fulfilled in this association.
This book is a must read for anyone interested in the growth of consciousness and evolution. Review by John Theobald

Sum: Forty Tales from the Afterlives
David Eagleman
Does heaven consist of all our desires coming true, therefore creating our own personal hell?
Does God spend his evenings reading Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein
because he finally found a character who can relate to his own personal experiences?
Were we created by machines of subpar intelligence? Did they create us so they can come to us for the answers to which they themselves cannot fathom… only to be disappointed by a human creation that cannot provide these so called answers?
In the afterlife do we relive all our experiences but only this time in sequential order… sleeping for 30 years in a row… showering for 200 days... Sitting on the toilet for 5 months?
This creative book delves into 40 possibilities or visions of what the after life can look and feel like.
Each chapter is just a few pages long and can be read in a few moments. But the humor and understanding of the human condition in each of these snippets of the hereafter is profound. This is a truly unique book filled with much valuable insight on the human condition, both on a spiritual and materialistic manner. Written by a neuroscientist.

The Final Event: Dawn of the Age of Truth
Robert Cox
The latest book by former Purusha member Robert Cox has just been published. The Final Event provides major new insight into the timing and significance of the momentous events beginning now to unfold on planet earth at this most crucial period of human history. Based upon his own intuitive cognitions, the author ties together prophetic indicators derived from the Vedic, Egyptian, Christian, Greek, Judaic, and Mayan traditions. Robert predicts that the 42-month transition period, (that began June 2009) which marks the time of Tribulation, will end on December 21, 2012, when the light of the new Golden Age will first be seen.

Entangled Minds: Extrasensory Experiences in a Quantum Reality
Dean Radin
This is a book that I hope every single person will choose to read. Whether you are a Muslim, Jew, Christian, Buddhist, Hindu or Atheist; whether you are strict materialist or a believer in spirituality, whether you are rich or poor, a doctor, lawyer, Indian Chief, or welfare recipient I think you will appreciate this book and be a better informed person for having read it.
The book explores what I consider to be the most important philosophical and scientific issues we encounter in life. It deals with what the author calls "The New Reality", which is an important paradigm shift that is arrived at by a scientific and statistical analysis of PSI experiments all over the world, combined with the most cogent and easily understandable explanations of quantum mechanics I have ever read. It is rounded out by the author's understanding of the emerging paradigm of "entanglement".
The first 7 or 8 chapters (about 150 pages or so) are somewhat heavy on the statistical analysis, but done in a very easy-to-understand and fun-to-read style. The author lays out incredibly convincing evidence for the existence of PSI. PSI is a term that includes all sorts of mind-to-mind and mind-to-matter relationships. These include simple tests for ESP, and moves on to precognition, gut feelings, dreams, mind influencing matter etc. In my opinion, some of this stuff is so exciting and so mind-blowing or mind-boggling that it is impossible to read this book without getting very excited.
After demonstrating beyond a reasonable doubt the existence of PSI, the author next tackles the more formidable job of trying to explain the mechanics of how it works. Chapter 12, A New Reality, I would rate as probably the single best chapter I have ever read in any book at any time. If one wants to skim the first 200 pages and go right to this chapter you will still get your money's worth.
One of my heros is Richard Feynman, Nobel Laureate physicist. (By the way,
Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman—reviewed on this site, just click on the title—is one of my all-time favorite books.) Feynman believed that the single most important experiment in quantum physics was the famous "two-slit" experiment which demonstrates that light—and/or particles like electrons—are both particles and waves, depending upon how one observes them. In chapter 12 of this book, Dean Radin does the best job I have ever seen of explaining how the two-slit experiment works, what it implies about reality and consciousness and how we draw on it and our own understanding to better perceive the mysteries of creation, of time, space, and physical reality.
If you never read a book about relativity and quantum physics I can understand why it might be intimidating to do so. I think that the explanations in Chapter 12 are so well done and put into such a perfect context that anyone at all could gain great insight and pleasure from reading it. You might gain everything you need to know or grok from this single chapter rather than wading through hundreds or thousands of pages as I have done.
The author does an outstanding job of presenting many different and credible theories of the mechanics of how PSI might operate. This, in turn, is done in the context of some very special insights into the nature of consciousness, group consciousness, and reality drawn from a scientific basis but integrated into a more holistic outlook.
I could go on and on, but this review is already too long. One of my favorite books of all time is The Holographic Universe, by Michael Talbot. I can't say that this book is quite as good or important as Talbot's book, but it is right up there with the best and most important books I have read that try to tie together themes of science and consciousness. Some of the studies about group consciousness and how it affected random numbers generated by computers is not only compelling, but mind-blowing.
Obviously I recommend this book as highly as I can and I do hope many of you will enjoy it nearly as much as I did. Review by Len Oppenheim

Secret Journey to the Enlightened Mind: Life with Three Spiritual Giants of Our Age
Dr. James Weldon
Those of you who consider yourself spiritual seekers, and love to hear about "flashy experiences" will love reading Secret Journey to The Enlightened Mind: Life with Three Spiritual Giants of Our Age, by Dr. James Weldon. Some readers told Tony they loved the book once they got past the first 60 or 80 pages, which dealt with the Author’s early years. In fact, I found his youth and upbringing and experiences very entertaining and quite useful in putting into context the rest of his life. The "sizzle" begins with his initiation into TM and his experiences with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. He goes on from there to associate with Siddha Yoga (Muktananda and his spiritual heir Gurumayi Childvilasananda). Finally, he finds his fulfillment with Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. The book has integrity. I felt the honesty of the experiences and enjoyed the journey. For those of you who, like me, enjoy autobiographical accounts of spiritual quests, this is a must read. It is truly a memorable spiritual saga, and for those of us who like to hear about the intimate details of spiritual enfoldment this is a true page-turner and not to be missed. The Elixir of Immortality: A Modern-Day Alchemist's Discovery of the Philospher's Stone
Robert E. Cox
In 1989, while attempting to extract precious minerals from his property, a wealthy Arizonan obtained a mysterious white material that initially defied scientific attempts to identify it. After several years of testing, this substance was revealed to consist of gold and platinum—but in a form unknown to modern science. Further research showed that this powder, which had also been discovered to possess marvelous healing powers, contained monatomic forms of precious metals whose electron units had been altered to no longer display the physical, chemical, or electrical properties of the original elements. This substance, Robert Cox shows, bears eerie resemblance to the ultimate quest of the alchemists: the elixir of immortality. The mysterious material-spiritual science of alchemy was once pervasive throughout the ancient world, spanning the globe from China and India to Egypt and medieval Europe. In The Elixir of Immortality, Robert Cox reviews the alchemical lore of these traditions and the procedures each used to produce this fabulous elixir. Using his own alchemical research, he then reveals secrets that have been kept hidden for millennia heuncovered in his own modern-day quest to rediscover this long-sought-after elixir of life. ROBERT E. COX holds a master’s degree in Vedic Studies from the Institute of Creative Intelligence in Switzerland. He is the author of Creating the Soul Body and The Pillar of Celestial Fire and has spent more than 15 years engaged in alchemical-metallurgical research.

Biocentrism: How Life and Consciousness Are the Keys to Understanding the True Nature of the Univers
Robert Lanza
A very exciting and important book.
The central thesis of this book is that "life creates the universe rather than vice versa". The thesis is developed using the multi-discipline backgrounds of the authors, which include leading edge biology, neuro-science, astronomy, quantum physics, and even common sense.
Here are a smattering of what I consider to be important quotes or insights found in this book:
"Until recently, we thought we knew what the universe was made of, but it now turns out that 96 per cent of the universe is composed of dark matter and dark energy, and we have virtually no idea what they are."
"It even turns out that the Big Bang has no answer for one of the greatest mysteries in the universe: why is the universe exquisitely fine-turned to support life?"
"It is well known that quantum theory, while working incredibly well mathematically, makes no logical sense…"
"In the last few decades, there has been considerable discussion of a basic paradox in the construction of the universe as we know it. Why are the laws of physics exactly balanced for animal life to exist? For example, if the Big Bang had been one-part-in-a-million more powerful, it would have rushed out too fast for the galaxies and life to develop…"
"And this is one of the central themes of biocentrism and this book: that the animal observer creates reality and not the other way around."
The above should give you enough of a taste to figure out whether or not this is a book for you. I find this approach and thinking fascinating and meaningful. This is one of the best and most important books I have ever read. Review by Len Oppenheim 20% off hardcover price

Cinema Nirvana: Enlightenment Teachings from the Movies
Dean Sluyter
Dean is a superb writer, film critic and teacher who infuses this book (his third) with deep spiritual insights (mostly Buddhist) about movies.
A partial list of the films included in the book are…
- A Night at the Opera (Marx brothers)
- The Truman (true man) Show
- Momento
- A Fist Full of Dollars
- Casablanc
- Easy Rider
- Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
- The Godfather
He also unfolds his own personal spiritual journey throughout the book, including his many years in the TM Movement. Dean, who became a TM teacher in 1971, was among the earliest MIU graduates, receiving his M.A. in 1975. His course in Enlightened Literature at the Pingry School in New Jersey was the first program to offer TM instruction to high school students, and several Movement leaders got their start in Dean’s classroom.
This is a hard book to put down, and you'll find yourself re-reading certain chapters to deepen your understanding, not just of the films, but also of Buddhist philosophy and psychology.
