Feeling Good Handbook
Dr. David D. Burns
If you experience problems with anxiety or depression if you are constantly worried about other people’s perception of you, I highly recommend this book by psychiatrist Dr. Burns.
I myself was nagged by a constant fear of rejection, a constant "mind reading" on my part, of what I felt others were thinking of me. When I discovered that "mind reading" is usually an inaccurate way to perceive an emotional response I became free of quite a bit of anxiety.
Mind Reading is one example Dr. Burns uses to demonstrate how our thoughts ruminate and create anxious feelings and how when we see the reality of our faulty reasoning, we are automatically freed of negative emotional prisons.
Dr. Burns uses scene playing as well as many case studies to show that much anxiety and depression are due to false assumptions on the sufferer’s part. Reading and doing the exercises in this book has been proven to be as or more effective than taking depression or anxiety medicine and without the negative side effects.
Reading Dr Burns book has relieved me of much unnecessary worrying and depression.. I highly recommend this book if you wish to be freed of unwanted emotional responses to the outside world.

Rational Fasting
Arnold Ehret
I was introduced to the health/vegetarian movement and the corresponding parallels between what we digest and our state of well being by my cousin Viktoras Kulvinskas.
Viktoras, through attempts to heal himself of many afflictions, was lead to The Hippocrates Health Institute in Boston, founded by Dr. Ann Wigmore.
He quickly became a convert to the vegetarian/raw food movement. Viktoras’ zeal was soon passed on to me. He turned me on to Ehret’s wonderful book on the benefits of fasting-out went my Dinty Moore canned Beef Stew and in came carrot juice and wheatgrass. Just a few days on this exotic, esoteric diet led me to my first deep spiritual experience. I became totally hooked on this whole health food thing.
Viktoras went on to become a famous author with his raw food vegetarian bible Survival Into The 21st Century and I went on to become a semi famous bookstore owner via selling Viktoras’ books. So the 21st Century Bookstore came into being via my start in the health movement, and Professor Ehret’s book was the trigger that began my spiritual quest. strong>Rational Fasting is one of the first, and still one of the finest, treatises on the powerful benefits of cleansing the body through fasting.

Contemporary Ayurveda
Hari Sharma & Christopher Clark
This is the first book we would recommend for anyone interested in learning about Ayurveda and bringing Ayurvedic solutions into one’s life. The book’s approach is Maharishi Ayur-Veda. This is a revival of the ancient knowledge structured by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and leading ayurvedic practitioners from India. This is a contemporary, consciousness-based model that incorporates Western scientific knowledge, especially of physics and the unified field, with the traditional ayurvedic approach. The book is comprehensive, covering both theory and practice. Well written, the book is neither too dry nor too esoteric for the average reader, but should also appeal to sophisticated Western medical practitioners. The reader will find a complete theoretical basis for understanding Ayurveda, along with a comprehensive practical manual for those who wish to benefit from the science of life.

Active Birth
Janet Balaskas
As a birth doula (labor support professional) I'm often asked, "If you only have time to read one book to learn about birthing very well, which would it be?" This is it. Written by a birth educator/yoga teacher, Active Birth emphasizes the need to develop trust and confidence in our instincts and our bodies' ability to birth. It describes how to choose caregivers who will support our freedom to remain active during labor, and to give birth in any position we wish. Mothers who used this guidance were found to have shorter labors, with more regular and efficient contractions; less pain and stress, and greater comfort; less pain medication required, and fewer babies in distress during labor. These mothers felt more empowered and had greater satisfaction with their birthing experiences. This book takes us through the physical conditioning and emotional/mental growth that is essential to birth powerfully. Includes many inspiring birth stories.

Awakening Nature's Healing Intelligence: Expanding Ayurveda Through the Maharishi Vedic Aproach to H
Dr. Hari Sharma
Eureka! I’ve found it! This is one health book I would describe as truly great. There are a lot of health books these days that I find interesting, but this is one of those very rare ones that seems to have been written by Nature itself. From the appropriate title, Awakening Nature’s Healing Intelligence, to the last page, it reads like a contemporary scripture. Like the petals of a flower which blossom in perfect sequence, so does the profound knowledge contained in this book unfold.
Dr. Hari Sharma is eminently qualified to write on this subject. He is chairman emeritus at Ohio State University’s College of Medicine and Public Health. A native of Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India, he was trained in a Western-style school of medicine in Lucknow. Later he studied under the tutelage of the great sage Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who, together with India’s foremost Ayurvedic physicians, has refined and expanded Ayurveda into a potent medical system—the Maharishi Vedic Approach to Health. Sharma’s book describes this system, its underlying theory, as well as the impressive body of scientific research on its various modalities.
What is the Maharishi Vedic Approach to Health? Dr. Sharma explains: "The focus of this comprehensive system of natural health care is on the underlying wholeness of existence and the structuring dynamics of intelligence that give rise to the human physiology. Disease is viewed as the result of the breakdown in the delicate balance of the coordinating intelligence that rules the functioning of the body. This breakdown occurs on a level deeper than organs, tissues, or cells—it results from the disconnection of intelligence from its source in wholeness. This concept of wholeness derives from the Vedic tradition and parallels modern physics’ discovery of the unified source of reality beyond the subatomic level. The insubstantial nature of material creation—as identified by both Vedic science and modern physics—cannot be ignored if we are to have a complete model of the human body and the nature of health and disease. As the only system of health care that provides a model for integrating this understanding of the deepest nature of reality with our current understanding of health and disease, the Maharishi Vedic Approach to Health has much to offer."
According to Sharma, the essence of the Maharishi Vedic Approach to Health is that healers should address healthcare holistically, as well as all the specific values that constitute health, i.e. physiology; intelligence at the basis of physiology; influence of the environment; influence of buildings in which one lives and works; influence of the distant environment: sun, moon, planets, stars; and the influence of collective health on society.
While many of the modalities employed by the Maharishi Vedic Approach to Health are similar to traditional Ayurvedic techniques, they have a strong emphasis on the element of consciousness, which renders them far more effective. For example, subtle Vedic sounds, which have been found to correspond to areas of the human body, have been very effectively used to heal chronic illnesses. This is Maharishi Vedic Vibration Therapy and functions at the subtle junction point where mind and body meet.
Because he delves so deeply into the field of pure knowledge, Sharma highlights what is achingly missing from Western allopathy. The many shortcomings of modern healthcare stem from a lack of total knowledge of the mind and body interplay. And that total knowledge is lucidly, and I would say historically, presented in this book. All medical doctors and health practitioners should be required to read it!
This book is not just for healthcare providers; anyone who is a seeker of wisdom will revel in it. If you really want to have the inside track on a profound approach to health, you will love this book. Without being a typical ‘how-to’ volume, it offers expert resources one can seek to pursue this path. And if you are even a bit as inspired as I am after reading it, you will want to do just that.

The Holographic Universe
Michael Talbot
I can’t believe this book was published 13 years ago and no one, until recently, told me to read it. I think this is one of the best and most significant books I have ever read. Granted, I have an interest in physics, the mind, paranormal abilities, and of course the nature of reality or consciousness, but this book is so well-written and contains so much research and leading edge theories that I believe anyone and everyone who would read this book would love it almost as much as I did.
Michael Talbot, the author, combines personal experience as someone who has paranormal or psychic abilities with a deep knowledge of the latest thinking of physicists. On top of this he has done an incredible job of gathering data and compiling resources about the paranormal abilities of the mind that should convince even the most skeptical reader that reality is much more complex than most materialists would care to admit. His research is well footnoted and has provided me with a number of books or articles I am looking forward to reading.
I couldn’t put this book down. I found it very thrilling and inspiring. Although I don’t necessarily agree with all of the author’s suggestions and/or conclusions about this being a holographic universe, it is certainly something worth thinking about. More importantly his thorough and scientific treatment and fantastic documentation of such things as psychic phenomena, out of body experiences, and near death experiences are thrilling and introduce us on very subtle and deep levels to the really important issues about the nature of life and/or the purpose or meaning of life.
I am definitely adding this book to my "Top-ten" list of the best and most important books I have ever read. I can't wait to read some of his other books!

Anatomy of the Spirit: The Seven Stages of Power and Healing
Caroline Myss
Anatomy of the Spirit is the boldest presentation to date of energy medicine by one of its premier practitioners, internationally acclaimed medical intuitive Caroline Myss, one of the "hottest new voices in the alternative health/spirituality scene" (Publishers Weekly). Based on fifteen years of research into energy medicine, Dr. Myss's work shows how every illness corresponds to a pattern of emotional and psychological stresses, beliefs, and attitudes that have influenced corresponding areas of the human body.
Anatomy of the Spirit also presents Dr. Myss's breakthrough model of the body's seven centers of spiritual and physical power, in which she synthesizes the ancient wisdom of three spiritual traditions—the Hindu chakras, the Christian sacraments, and the Kabbalah's Tree of Life—to demonstrate the seven stages through which everyone must pass in the search for higher consciousness and spiritual maturity. With this model, Dr. Myss shows how you can develop your own latent powers of intuition as you simultaneously cultivate your personal power and spiritual growth.
By teaching you to see your body and spirit in a new way, Anatomy of the Spirit provides you with the tools for spiritual maturity and physical wholeness that will change your life.

Sarngadhara-Samhita: A Treatise on Ayurveda
Prof. K.R. Srikanta Murthy
May Lord Purari (Shiva), in whose brilliance shines Bhavani line over, just as wonderful herbs shine in the moonlight spread on the slopes of the Himalyas, grant us prosperity. Such of the famous recipes which the sages formulated and found effective by the physicians from repeated usage, are herein collected by Sarngadhara (author) for the benefit of all good men. Having diagnosed the disease first, by correct understanding of its cause, prodromal symptoms, characteristic features and variety from a detailed examination of the patient, the physician should adopt either a karsana chikitsa (therapy of thinning the body) or Brmhana chikitsa (therapy of fattening the body) with the use of effective recipes. Innumerable are the varieties of potent herbs which shine like gods; physicians should acquire infalliable knowledge of their various properties. Diseases arise from many causes such as swabhavika (natural), agantuka (external agents), kayikantara (internal agents), karmadosa (past sins) and others. To get rid of them and obtain happiness, the physician should make use of efficacious recipes. I am going to describe briefly in these pages, such recipes which are extolled by the scriptures and found effective by the personal experience and logical reasoning for the benefit of the people of the world at large.
In the first khanda (section) the first chapter deals with paribhasa (definition) followed by six chapters dealing with bhaisajya vyakhyana (principles of pharmacy) nadi parikshadi vidhi (examination of pulse, etc.), dipanapachanadi (pharmacological definitions), kaladi akhyana (description of structures of the body), aharadi gati (digestion and fate of food) and roga ganana (enumeration of diseases) respectively. The madhyama khanda (section section) has twelve chapters dealing with the preparation of swarasa (fresh juice, aqueous extract), qwatha (decoction), phanta (hot infusion), hima (cold infusion), kalka (paste), churna (powder), gutika (pill), leha (confection), sneha (lipid preparation), sandhana (fermented preparation), dhatu shuddhi (purification of minerals and metals) and rasas (metallic recipes). —From the first chapter.

Same Soul, Many Bodies: Discover the Healing Power of Future Lives Through Progression Therapy
Brian L. Weiss, M.D.
The cover of this book has the promotional subtitle: Discover the Healing Power of Future Lives Through Progression Therapy. There is a treatment of progression therapy in most of the cases in this book, but for the most part the primary treatment for the cases remains regression to past lives. Despite that caveat, this is a book I would highly recommend.
When I read Dr. Weiss's first book, Many Lives, Many Masters, I became an immediate fan of Brian Weiss. Here was a mainstream psychiatrist, undergraduate degree from Columbia, Yale Medical School, who went out on a limb and exposed his beliefs about reincarnation and many spiritual themes. I even went to one of his seminars in San Francisco. I found his following books to be less enthralling and thought he was becoming both too commercial, and also too self-impressed with his burgeoning "guru status". Also, I have reservations about the validity of data obtained from hypnotic states. After all, the subject certainly might be "suggestible."
However, Weiss is thorough and careful and he presents very compelling evidence. This book was much better than any of his other books with the exception of Many Lives, Many Masters, which I do highly recommend. The cases are fascinating and the new wrinkle of taking patients forward into the future is worth exploring. All sorts of issues about free will, karma, and the nature of reality are raised in these studies. Also there are some very thought-provoking glimpses into the future of our planet and the human race.
My bottom line is that I found this book not only fascinating and intellectually stimulating, but I also felt very uplifted and found the experiences related to be very inspirational. This is worth reading.

From the best selling author and renowned mindfulness teacher, scientist, and educator… a guide to living a meaningful life.
This follow-up to the widely praised national bestseller Wherever You Go, There You Are is yet another revolutionary offering from Jon Kabat-Zinn, showing readers how the power of mindfulness can bring radical change to their lives.
In the national bestseller Wherever You Go, There You Are, Jon Kabat-Zinn struck a chord in contemporary society that continues to reverberate to this day. It has been embraced by politicians, business leaders, and celebrities and endures as a classic with readers. In his groundbreaking new book, Dr. Kabat-Zinn teaches us how to harness the power of mindfulness to effect profound change in our personal lives and in the world.
As stress continues to exact a toll on everyday life, people are increasingly turning to ancient, meditative methods, which have been tested by science, to relieve the ill effects and become more focused, healthy, and proactive. Kabat-Zinn has been for decades at the forefront of this mind/body movement and the revolution in medicine and health care it has spawned, demystifying it and bringing it into the mainstream. In Coming to Our Senses, he shares how every human has the capacity to mobilize deep, innate resources for continual learning, growing, healing, and transformation through mindfulness.
Woven into eight parts, Coming to Our Senses uses anecdotes and stories from Kabat-Zinn's own life experiences and work in his clinic to illustrate healing possibilities. At its core, the book offers remarkable insight into how to use the five senses—touch, hearing, sight, taste, and smell, plus awareness itself—as a path to a healthier, saner, and more meaningful life.
This is the definitive book for our time on the connection between mindfulness, health, and our physical and spiritual well-being.

The Biology of Belief
Bruce Lipton, Ph.D.
This is a very important book, as it bridges science, biology, and consciousness. The author is a credible Ph.D. who has written serious articles in peer reviewed journals and who has taught at various medical schools, including Stanford.
The writing is both personal and universal. Lipton describes his own "epiphany," and how it led him to study and discover certain very important principles and led him to develop pioneering results in Epigenetics. The personal style of this narrative makes it easy to read and understand and, most important, very enjoyable.
If you believe that your thoughts affect the biochemistry of your body then I think you will find the approach and evidence in this book to be quite compelling. If you have ever questioned whether or not Darwinian evolution is the whole story, there are some fascinating facts and principles to make you wonder. If you think you are a prisoner of your own DNA, read this book, and think again.
I think it is not unlikely that this book will develop a kind of cult following and I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Where God Lives: The Science of the Paranormal and How Our Brains Are Linked to the Universe
Melvin Morse, M.D., with Paul Perry
Every so often we discover a little gem of a book that is so good, so sweet, and so universal that we take great pleasure in recommending it to everyone. Where God Lives is the perfect example of a perfect little book.
The author, Melvin Morse, M.D. is a pediatrician who practices in Seattle. Early in his medical career he encountered a case of a child who recovered after a Near Death Experience (NDE.) This led him to seek out and treat numerous children who had NDE's. This book relates his experiences with these unique patients, and what they taught him about life, consciousness, the brain, and spirituality.
Whether you consider yourself a "spiritual person," or a scientific materialist, the data and conclusions in this book will be well worth considering. Morse's data and conclusion concerning the functioning of the right temporal lobe of the brain and how it can shape one's perceptions of reality and relationship to humanity and the universe are fascinating and enlightening.
I give this book my highest recommendation for all readers from all walks of life.

Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder
Richard Louv
Today's kids are increasingly disconnected from the natural world, says child advocacy expert Louv (Childhood's Future, Fatherlove, etc.), even as research shows that "thoughtful exposure of youngsters to nature can… be a powerful form of therapy for attention-deficit disorder and other maladies." Instead of passing summer months hiking, swimming and telling stories around the campfire, children these days are more likely to attend computer camps or weight-loss camps: as a result, Louv says, they've come to think of nature as more of an abstraction than a reality. Indeed, a 2002 British study reported that eight-year-olds could identify Pokémon characters far more easily than they could name "otter, beetle, and oak tree." Gathering thoughts from parents, teachers, researchers, environmentalists and other concerned parties, Louv argues for a return to an awareness of and appreciation for the natural world. Not only can nature teach kids science and nurture their creativity, he says, nature needs its children: where else will its future stewards come from? Louv's book is a call to action, full of warnings, but also full of ideas for change. Agent, James Levine (May 20)

The Journey: A Practical Guide to Healing Your Life and Setting Yourself Free
Brandon Bays
Nearly 10 years ago, Bays was diagnosed with a basketball-sized tumor in her uterus, which was causing internal bleeding. While her surgeon advised immediate removal, Bays, an alternative health-care worker, persuaded the doctor to allow her to try natural methods to reduce the size of the tumor. Bays, already reasonably well versed in relaxation techniques and homeopathic medicine, immediately sought out various noninvasive treatments including vitamins, a radical change in diet, massage and various other emotional and physical therapies. Miraculously, within a few months, the tumor disappeared. This dramatic recovery motivated Bays to change her life and teach others her healing practices. It was a difficult time for her; her husband of many years announced he was having an affair and eventually married his girlfriend. However, Bays rarely dwells on the negative; when she's angry, she admits it but manages to put her anger toward something productive. Like Deepak Chopra, on whose teaching her method is based, Bays wants people to focus on what she calls "the Journey" a path, she claims, to freedom and accomplishment that consists primarily of emotional reckoning and relaxation techniques. Bays's optimism will appeal to readers who are weary of traditional treatments that don't relieve emotional or physical hardships. However, other readers will tire of Bays's unmitigated certainty in the rightness of her approach.

Extra-Ordinary Healing Power of Ordinary Things: Fourteen Natural Steps to Health and Happiness
Larry Dossey, M.D.
Every so often I read a book which I hope and pray all my friends and loved ones and even all my acquaintances will read. Larry Dossey’s book, Extra-Ordinary Healing Power of Ordinary Things is the first book I have read in a long time that I feel that way about. In fact, it was so good, I purchased 10 extra copies and had them sent to family and friends.
What, may you ask, is so special about this book? That is a good question. This answer is that this book is profound, charming, easy to read, and full of so many insights and out of the box ideas that anyone and everyone should love it. Besides that, the health tips, insights, and wisdom will probably help you to live a better and more enjoyable life.
Dossey is a charming guy. He is down to earth. His writings are full of common sense (which is so un-common in this day and age). This is a great book that can help each and every one of us align his or her consciousness and behavior with the wisdom of nature.
Every man needs to read the chapter on “Tears”. “Dirt”, “Music”, “Risk”, and “Miracles” are each chapters which cite important data which should help us to realize how we need to question a lot of modern concepts and go back to common sense and to aligning ourselves with nature and consciousness.
If this book were published and promoted in the mainstream I believe it could be at least as popular as The Da Vinci Code.

The Miracle Man: The Life Story of Joao de Deus
Robert Pellegrino-Estrich
If you are anyone you know is in the unfortunate circumstance of having a debilitating physical disease of worse yet, a terminal illness, you really ought to read, or give your friend a copy of The Miracle Man: The life story of Joao De Deus , by Robert Pellegrino-Estrich.
In July of 2006 a good friend from out of town was visiting Fairfield and he paid Dena and me a visit. He had just returned from Brazil where he and two friends had spent two weeks in the small encampment where John of God has treated over 11 million people in 30 years. The story of John of God has been well-researched and well-documented. A great deal of information is available via the web. There have been TV documentaries and many articles written about him.
This simple book gives excellent insights into what is happening the mechanics of what John of God does when he does operations, removes tumors, cures Aids, etc. It is an astonishing little book. (John of God is a medium, but that is only the beginning of the story and really only scratches the surface of this phenomenon.)
The fact that my friend was there and saw these things and experienced the powerful vibrations in this unique spiritual center of healing gives me a very high level of confidence that this is for real.
Furthermore, the miraculous healings at the Casa de Dom Inacio are now more easily accessed by non-Brazilians. It is only a 2 hour drive from Brasilia. The roads are good, and the accommodations are quite nice.
If someone wants or needs to go there, one can email the author of this book (he provides his email address at the end of the book) who can arrange transportation from Brasilia and quiet and clean accommodations with meals.
Seriously, this book is a Must Read, by everyone!

Train Your Mind Change Your Brain
Sharon Begley
A good book that deals with the relationship between neuroscience and Buddhism. The book’s main premise is that it’s possible to change the structure and function of the brain therefore altering how we think and feel. Begley shows us that the brain structure is not fixed in stone and can undergo dramatic physical changes, even changing the actual neurons.
By studying Buddhist monks, the author shows the power of focused attention (mindfulness) in changing dramatically the physical function of the brain, allowing wholesale change that heals trauma and compensates for disability.

Matrix Energetics: The Science and Art of Transformation
Richard Bartlett
This book was recommended to me by a friend who is very “plugged in” to the new age and spiritual healing community. He gave this book his highest recommendation and assured me that Bartlett and his healings and seminars are very effective and to be trusted and taken seriously. That is why I read this book.
Bartlett is no run of the mill guy, and his writing is certainly capable of expanding horizons and/or breaking boundaries. No question that Bartlett has taken some of the mind-expanding aspects of quantum physics and married them to a new paradigm of healing.
A lot of this stuff is quite “freaky” but also very convincing. As noted by C. Norman Shealy, M.D., Ph.D., president of Holos University Graduate Seminary, founding president of the American Holistic Medical Association, and author of Life Beyond 100
wrote (quoted on the book jacket): “Matrix Energetics applies the principles of quantum physics as a unique and effective approach to healing. This is the essence of energy medicine.”
This is a fascinating story. It is very easy to read and comprehend, and it makes perfect sense to me and many others who are quoted in the book. The proof is in the pudding and it appears the results in healing are quite remarkable and repeatable. The author claims this technique requires no special healing or energetic qualities by the practitioner. It is just a channel of the natural functioning of the laws of quantum physics.
The book flowed well and my sense is that the author is highly credible. Naturally I strongly recommend it to everyone. I would especially think that anyone who has a condition or situation that might be amenable to healing ought to read the book and give the technique a try. If anyone does so, please let me know if it works or does not.
If it does nothing else, I do believe this book will open up the reader to the infinite possibilities inherent in the “Zero Point Energy Field”.

Fantastic Voyage: Live Long Enough to Live Forever
Ray Kurzweil and Dr. Terry Grossman
A few years ago I read Fantastic Voyage: Live Long Enough to Live Forever, by Ray Kurzweil and Dr. Terry Grossman. Ray Kurzweil is considered by many to be a true genius. His remarkable inventions during the 20th Century resulted in his accumulation of great wealth. His fascination with science, technology, and the progress which lies ahead for mankind resulted in his being acknowledged as one of the great living “futurists”. In his late 40’s he experienced some very serious health problems and his prognosis was not very good. He was out of shape, overweight, and his diet was not very healthy. Kurzweil turned his not inconsequential intelligence and energy towards the field of health and longevity. As a truly objective scientist and observer he did not start with a bias towards or against any approach. Eventually he encountered and worked with Dr. Terry Grossman, a traditionally trained Western, allopathic MD, who had gravitated towards a more holistic approach. The book they have collaborated on is, in my opinion, very unique in the sense that it takes the best from both worlds, traditional and non-traditional medicine. As a result I believe it provides a very unique and extremely valuable reference which each of us can use to find the best possible approach to treat existing conditions, or, most importantly, be pro-active in preventing disease and living a full, healthy, and active life.
Kurzweil is a great proponent of nanotechnology. As a futurist he foresees the day when little robots can cleanse and repair all of our organs and systems. He also believes that virtually all of our parts and organs can be replaced by man-made products in the future. The subtitle of this books “Live Long Enough to Live Forever” reflects his view that if we use all the current tools at our disposal perhaps it is possible to live long enough until future discoveries in the field of genetics and/or the technologies based on nanotechnology result in the potential for infinite life in our existing bodies. While I, for one, don’t buy this vision, I have found this book extremely useful in helping me to attain and maintain better health. I believe this a book that everyone ought to own. It should be read and then kept as a handy reference for referral when one or one’s family or friends develop any health issue that might require treatment.
I realize that seemingly infinite information and data is available on the internet. However, that information is gathered and/or made available by persons or organizations who may or may not be skilled, and who may or may not be biased. I have always lived by the philosophy that I do not have to reinvent the wheel. I like to find an expert in whom I have developed trust and then rely upon his or her opinion. I am fully confident in the intelligence and objectivity of Kurzweil and Grossman and that is why I am so totally sold out to the information and conclusions in this book.
This book is available in paperback for under $20 and, if you buy it and read it, it could prove to be the greatest investment in your entire life.
I think many of you might find this book so good and useful that you will come back and order additional copies for close friends and family members.

The Brain that Changes Itself: Stories of Personal Triumph from the Frontiers of Brain Science
Norman Doidge M.D.
Every so often I read a book that I consider to be so remarkable and wonderful that it makes me "high" and which I truly believe everyone would enjoy and benefit from reading. I recently had the pleasure of reading such a book that I would recommend to young and old, male and female, rich and poor, healthy and infirm. The Brain that changes Itself: Stories of Personal Triumph from the Frontiers of Brain Science, by Norman Doidge, M.D. fills the bill. Please, everyone, buy and read this book and see if you agree with me!
The author is a psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, and researcher on the faculties at Columbia University and The University of Toronto, and an author, essayist, and even a poet. He is uniquely qualified to discover, understand, and explain the breath-taking advances in understanding the growing field of neuroplasticity. One of my favorite books, The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, by Oliver Sachs, dealt with the remarkable functioning of the human brain in cases of brain injuries and certain birth abnormalities. If you have never read it, it is another “must-read”. Sachs, in his brief review of Doidge’s book, calls it “remarkable and a hopeful portrait of the endless adaptabilities of the human brain.”
I love books that are fun to read (which this is) and which "blow my mind" and give me great insights and understanding. This book is chock full of fascinating insights into neuroscience. At the same time, it is easy to understand and as engrossing as a good novel.
If you have any interest at all in understanding the remarkable ability of the human will and thinking machinery to do miraculous things, you will love this book. The stories about how stroke victims are able to overcome their disabilities are just the beginning. If you want to understand how autistic children can really be helped to lead more normal lives, or how thoughts or imagination can have major effects on your own physiology, this is a book for you. The research and practical programs available to avoid senile dementia and/or Alzheimer’s disease are not to be missed.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. The discoveries I made from reading this book have inspired me and uplifted me to the extent that few books have done in many years.
I want to make it very clear that not only is this book lucid, it is absolutely fascinating, so even those of you who generally avoid non-fiction should find this most enjoyable and satisfying.
